Incorporating patient safety and quality improvement into clinical education is essential. With the IHI Open School Graduate Medical Education (GME) Subscription, clinical educators will strengthen their own understanding of core quality and safety competencies and consider opportunities to integrate these competencies into graduate medical education (and other) curricula.
The IHI Open School Graduate Medical Education Subscription includes access to 4 courses in our Graduate Medical Education catalog, as well as earnable Continuing Education credits.

Included Courses

Visit each course page for detailed lesson summaries and Continuing Education information.

GME 201: Why Engage Health Care Workers in Quality and Safety?
This course discusses several reasons why organizations should strive to incorporate clinical staff in quality and safety work. You will hear from faculty and health care workers about why this effort is so important — and how it can enhance the overall quality and safety of health care delivery.

GME 202: Designing Educational Experiences in Health Care Improvement
This course discusses how to create an effective curriculum to teach quality improvement and patient safety. We’ll provide some examples of organizations that have been successful in this endeavor, along with a planning checklist any institution can use.

GME 203: A Roadmap for Facilitating Experiential Learning in Quality Improvement
This course will provide a roadmap that will help you engage health care workers in experiential learning at the point of care. We’ll cover three different models of experiential learning within an adaptable framework. Based on your setting, role, and evolving comfort with quality improvement and patient safety concepts and tools, you’ll choose the best approach for you.

GME 204: Aligning Graduate Medical Education with Organizational Quality & Safety Goals
This course will present present innovative strategies that training programs around the country are using to engage healthcare workers with their organization’s quality improvement and patient safety efforts.
