Prof Amar Shah is the National Clinical Director for Improvement in England, leading the application of improvement across England’s health and care system since 2023. This includes leading on the design and delivery of Learning & Improvement networks in each of England’s seven regions, on the topics of urgent & emergency care, elective care and mental health. He also leads the design and delivery of national improvement collaboratives (such as on frailty), large-scale capability building programmes (such as the NHS IMPACT operational improvement training), and engaging the whole of the NHS’s 1.4 million workforce to learn and adopt systematic approaches to improving care.

Amar led the quality approach at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) for 15 years, from 2011 to 2026 – this includes over a decade on the Board and executive team as the country’s first Chief Quality Officer. Through this work, Amar embedded a large-scale quality improvement infrastructure and quality management system, with demonstrable results across key areas of organisational performance, and three consecutive ‘Outstanding’ ratings by the Care Quality Commission.

He is the national improvement lead for mental health at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, leading a number of large-scale improvement collaboratives on topics such as restrictive practice, workforce wellbeing and equalities.

Amar is chair of the Scientific Advisory Group at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and also acts as faculty with IHI, teaching and guiding improvers and healthcare systems across the world. He is honorary professor at the University of York School for Business and Society, and an honorary fellow with the Faculty for Public Health. Amar has completed an executive MBA in healthcare management, a masters in mental health law and a postgraduate certificate in medical education. He is a regular national and international keynote speaker at healthcare improvement conferences and has published over 50 peer-review articles in the field of quality management. He was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by His Majesty the King in 2024 for services to healthcare improvement, and the President’s Medal by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2025 for outstanding contribution to the field of mental health.

Diane Murray, served as Scotland’s Deputy Chief Nursing Officer until retiring in November 2021, leading national policy and professional strategy across adult nursing, and from a nursing perspective, shaping the country’s approach to quality, safety, and leadership development. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, she was one of the senior clinical voices guiding Scotland’s response, working closely with Health Board clinical teams and policymakers through an unprecedented period of challenge.

A firm believer that staff are the health system’s greatest asset, Diane led the Policy work that secured staff governance and health and care staffing legislation in Scotland— achievements that she regards as her proudest contributions. Her early clinical career spanned nursing and midwifery roles in both acute and community settings, before her deep interest in staff governance drew her into trade union and professional representation at Board and Government levels. This commitment to workforce, quality, and safety led to her role as Assistant Nurse Director for Quality, Improvement, Safety and Clinical Workforce Development, where she delivered sustained improvements in care and built organisation‑wide capacity and capability for improvement.

Since stepping down as Deputy Chief Nurse for Scotland, Diane has continued to influence health and care systems across the UK. She has supported the development of a new clinical model for Scotland’s proposed National Care Service, worked as Faculty with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement to strengthen Leadership for Quality in a diversity of settings, contributed to a major review of maternity services in Northern Ireland, and helped shape “Being Human,” the Country’s framework for safety culture.

Her impact has been widely recognised. In 2022 she received the UK Chief Nursing Officers’ Award for Lifetime Achievement, honouring her leadership in policy, workforce planning, and national and international efforts during the pandemic. In 2023, the Nursing Times named her one of 75 influential nurses and midwives marking the NHS’s 75th anniversary.

The IHI CQO programme offered valuable opportunities to connect with peers nationally and internationally, bringing together a range of perspectives on whole systems quality. The Executive Leadership for Quality - Global Programme aims to demonstrate how to apply quality management best practices at a system level across an organisation.

All Scholarships are reviewed on an individual basis. If multiple individuals from the same organization wish to apply for a scholarship, everyone must submit an application. Group discounts are also available, see information above.

To ensure equal distribution of funds, all scholarships applications are reviewed using the same scoring criteria. All awarded amounts are final.
