Change Packages for Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) Patient Safety Bundles

These change packages support implementation of the AIM Patient Safety Bundles, evidence-based best practices to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality across eight critical topic areas.

Highlights

  • Change packages with evidence-based or best-practice changes specific to 8 key topics to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality

The Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) Patient Safety Bundles are a compilation of evidence-based best practices to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality across eight critical topic areas.

To promote the successful implementation of these bundles in hospitals and health systems, AIM partnered with IHI to create a series of associated change packages on these topics:

  • Obstetric Hemorrhage
  • Severe Hypertension in Pregnancy
  • Safe Reduction of Primary Cesarean Birth
  • Cardiac Conditions in Obstetric Care
  • Care for Pregnant and Postpartum People with Substance Use Disorder
  • Perinatal Mental Health Conditions
  • Postpartum Discharge Transition
  • Sepsis in Obstetric Care

The change packages include evidence-based or best-practice changes specific to each topic and are structured around the following components:

  • Primary Drivers: Major processes, operating rules, or structures that will contribute to moving toward the aim.
  • Change Concepts: Broad concepts that are not yet specific enough to be actionable, but that will be used to generate specific ideas for change.
  • Change Ideas: Actionable, specific ideas for changing a process. Change ideas can come from research, best practices, or from other organizations that have recognized a problem and have demonstrated improvement on a specific issue related to that problem.
