According to the US Census Bureau, the US population aged 65+ years is expected to nearly double over the next 30 years. These demographic advances have left our health systems struggling to reliably provide evidence-based practice to every older adult at every care interaction. IHI’s Age-Friendly Health Systems Online Course with Coaching is a new, in-depth course that teaches the elements of the 4Ms Framework (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility), and how to implement age-friendly care learnings in different types of care settings.

Who Should Attend

Session Faculty

Alice Bonner, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAANP, has been a nurse practitioner for over 30 years. She is currently Senior Advisor for Aging at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and Chair of the Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition. She is also Adjunct Faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Bonner received an AB from Cornell University, a BSN from Columbia University, an MSN from University of Massachusetts – Lowell and a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Graduate School of Nursing. From 2015-2019, Bonner served as Secretary of the Executive Office of Elder Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. From 2011 to 2013, Dr. Bonner served as Director of the Division of Nursing Homes in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in Baltimore, MD. Her research interests include home and community-based programs, nursing home quality, and nursing workforce development.

Andrea Wershof Schwartz, MD, MPH, AGSF, is an IHI faculty member and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, where she co-directs the Geriatrics Theme for medical students. Dr. Schwartz is a geriatrician at the Veterans Affairs Healthcare Center in Boston, Massachusetts, where she serves as Associate Director for Clinical Innovation in the New England Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center.

Christina Southey, MSc, is an Improvement Advisor with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and independent consultant. She currently supports IHI’s Age-Friendly Health Systems action communities, spread initiative and international work and has been involved in the movement since 2020. Additionally, she has supported multiple projects in various care settings including those focused on equity, chronic disease, and maternal care. She especially enjoys initiatives that include fostering community collaboration in partnership with those with lived experience. Southey has taught quality improvement in small and large group education sessions in North America and internationally. She is a seasoned facilitator and trained in the Lewis method of Deep Democracy to support groups working through conflict. Christina holds a Masters in Community Health and Epidemiology and lives with her family in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

A Unique Learning Experience

IHI online courses with coaching combine self-directed sessions and live virtual instruction facilitated by expert IHI faculty. This design gives learners flexibility with their schedule, without sacrificing the deep learning that occurs with our specialized faculty.

Continuing Education

In support of improving patient care, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the health care team.

Continuing education credits for this program are still being finalized and will be updated shortly.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity may also be applicable for other professions that accept AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. This course includes scheduled live components as part of the overall educational experience. Participation in both the enduring and live portions is required to achieve the stated learning objectives.

Registration Rates

Regular Rate: $549 per person

This rate includes self-directed sessions throughout the online course, five all-learner calls, and the use of all tools and resources.

Scholarships

IHI is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to assist with program registration costs for those working in:

Independent, United States Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that are not affiliated with a hospital or health system
Critical Access Hospitals
Independent practices with fewer than 20 physicians
Hospitals with fewer than 50 beds
Members of America's Essential Hospitals
501(c)(3) organization with a defined operating budget of less than $5 million, serving community-based populations
Ministries of Health
Faith-based health institutions
Skilled Nursing Facilities

To apply for a scholarship, please complete the online Scholarship Application by September 23, 2026. IHI will not consider applications submitted after this date. Scholarship decisions will be announced on September 30, 2026.

All Scholarships are reviewed on an individual basis. If multiple individuals from the same organization wish to apply for a scholarship, each individual must submit an application. Group discounts are also available, see information above.

To ensure equal distribution of funds, all scholarships applications are reviewed using the same scoring criteria. All awarded amounts are final.
