Muitas organizações de saúde têm as melhores das intenções em melhorar os seus processos clínicos e resultados para os pacientes, mas estes resultados ficam aquém do esperado, porque os profissionais não têm o conhecimento necessário para executar de forma eficaz e consistente as estratégias de melhoria da qualidade.
O curso “Ciência da Melhoria na Prática” (CMP) tem como objetivo desenvolver as competências necessárias para realizar projetos de melhoria bem-sucedidos. O curso inclui uma preparação prévia, tarefas preliminares, encontros virtuais de aprendizagem, mentorias virtuais de acompanhamento para instrução, revisão dos conteúdos, novos conteúdos e apresentação dos resultados dos projetos de melhoria. Todas as atividades terão acompanhamento do corpo docente do Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
Os encontros virtuais combinam palestras com exercícios interativos e em grupo para consolidar conceitos e a utilização, na prática, das ferramentas fundamentais da Ciência da Melhoria. Os participantes serão orientados a aplicar a aprendizagem adquirida na implantação de projetos de melhoria na organização de origem. Para participar neste curso, os participantes deverão inscrever-se com uma equipa da sua unidade e ter um Projeto de Melhoria e desenvolver um Termo de Compromisso do Projeto de Melhoria que aborde algum aspecto do cuidado aos pacientes.

Objetivos

O curso “Ciência da Melhoria na Prática” (CMP) tem como objetivo desenvolver as competências necessárias em profissionais de saúde e administradores da área, para concretizar projetos de melhoria de sucesso. O foco desta formação baseia-se no conceito de que “todos os sistemas são perfeitamente desenhados para obter os resultados que obtém”. Por isso, a abordagem é voltada para preparar as equipas de cuidados de saúde e administrativas para redesenhar o sistema de forma a oferecer cuidados mais eficientes e de melhor qualidade.

No fim dos 10 meses espera-se que os profissionais envolvidos:
• Desenvolvam o conhecimento e as competências especificas de modo a
se destacarem na arte e ciência da melhoria.
• Conduzam com maestria projetos de melhoria com resultados sustentáveis.
• Desenvolvam Ideias factíveis e cultivem um ambiente de aprendizagem colaborativo
que, em conjunto, promovem a obtenção de resultados positivos.

Estrutura

O curso inclui um conjunto de tarefas preliminares, 17 sessões de aprendizagem virtual (SAV), uma sessão de aprendizagem presencial (SAP) de dois dias, seis mentorias virtuais para acompanhamento dos projetos e uma sessão de aprendizagem virtual dedicada à liderança (SAV Liderança). Nesta última os líderes da organização terão a oportunidade de compreender em detalhe o percurso das suas equipas e o seu papel na remoção das barreiras sistémicas para o sucesso do projeto.
Todas as atividades serão acompanhadas pelo corpo docente do Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).

Os encontros combinam conteúdos teóricos seguidos de exercícios interativos e práticos em grupo, para consolidar conceitos e a aplicação prática, das ferramentas fundamentais das Ciências da Melhoria.

As equipas devem desenvolver e executar um projeto de melhoria na sua instituição, com um objetivo definido, indicadores de resultado e de processo e uma teoria da mudança baseada em evidência científica, durante a duração do curso. Receberão todo o conteúdo teórico durante os primeiros seis meses da iniciativa e, nos restantes meses, participarão de sessões de aprendizagem virtual (SAV) no modelo “todos aprendem, todos ensinam” – momentos de aprendizagem cruzada e momentos em que o nosso corpo docente irá analisar e comentar os bons exemplos partilhados.

Público Alvo

Este programa intensivo é ideal para equipas que já estão ou planeiam estar envolvidas em projetos de melhoria da qualidade dentro do âmbito da saúde. Especificamente, recomendamos este programa para:

• Líderes e membros de equipas clínicas
• Profissionais que trabalham na área da melhoria da qualidade
• Profissionais clínicos e administrativos que dão apoio à equipa clínica

Para este curso, as equipas devem ser constituídas por no mínimo três e no máximo de cinco participantes, com os seguintes perfis:

• Líder Médico (a): Profissional responsável por liderar a equipa do projeto, garantindo que as atividades decorrem dentro do prazo e delegando tarefas
• Líder Enfermeiro (a): Responsável por liderar o projeto na perspectiva da enfermagem, assim como pela elaboração e envio do relatório mensal
• Gestor (a) do Projeto (administrativo): responsável pela organização de toda a documentação do projeto, agendamento de reuniões e apoio na recolha e organização dos indicadores.
• Outros Participantes: Outros profissionais de saúde ou utentes que contribuam diretamente para o projeto.

Faculty

Leslie Jurecko, MD, MBA, serves as SVP and Chief Medical Officer for MCIC, a captive insurer that supports top-tier academic medical centers in reducing preventable harm. Dr. Jurecko was the past Chief Safety, Quality, and Patient Experience Officer of Cleveland Clinic Health System. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Jurecko served as Senior Vice President for Quality, Safety and Experience for Spectrum Health (now Corewell Health), a nonprofit integrated health system with 15 hospitals, multiple ambulatory sites and a health plan. Dr. Jurecko earned her MBA from Grand Valley State University, Seidman College of Business, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. She received her medical degree from Wayne State University and completed her pediatric residency at Northwestern University, Children’s Memorial Hospital. Dr. Jurecko also completed the Patient Safety Executive Development Program and the Chief Quality Officer Program IHI. Dr. Jurecko now serves as core faculty for IHI. Becker’s Hospital has named Dr. Jurecko one of the top patient safety experts to know. Driven to reduce preventable suffering of patients and share any learnings broadly, Dr. Jurecko is frequently invited to speak at national conferences.

Abraham Jacob, MD, MHA, Chief Quality Officer, M Health Fairview, joined the Department of Pediatrics in 2005 to start and direct the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. The Division has grown substantially since 2005 and has become the largest service for admissions at M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital (UMMCH). The program currently provides inpatient pediatric services at UMMCH, Fairview Ridges Hospital, Maple Grove Hospital, and Shriners. Dr. Jacob served as Chief Medical Officer for UMMCH from 2012-2019 with a focus on patient safety, quality, and patient experience. He is now the Chief Quality Officer for M Health Fairview and a staff attending on the General Pediatrics service at UMMCH and on the Internal Medicine service at UMMC. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Jacob went on to medical school at the University of Toledo College of Medicine where he graduated in 1994. He went on to complete his Internal Medicine/ Pediatrics residency at the University of Minnesota in 1998. After completing residency, he helped to start the first combined Internal Medicine/ Pediatrics practice in the Twin Cities with five of his residency classmates and served as medical director of the clinic. Since coming to the University of MN as faculty, Dr. Jacob's main interests have included resident education, family-centered care, quality improvement, and patient safety. He helped lead an UMMCH initiative that recently won the MN Hospital Association 2015 Patient Safety Improvement Award. He is board-certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine.

Amy Lu, MD, Chief Quality Officer, University of California San Francisco Health, is focused on high-value, patient-centered clinical redesign and pathways across the continuum of care. In her role as the Chief Quality Officer for University of California San Francisco Health and the Physician Advisor for Utilization Management for Stanford Health Care, she works on clinical pathways and improvement initiatives that reduce inappropriate utilization and unwarranted clinical variation. In the School of Medicine, Dr. Lu is the Vice Chair of Quality, Safety and Improvement in the Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine department at Stanford, where she mentors and works with faculty and residents on quality and safety projects that improve perioperative care. Dr. Lu is also the Chair for the Vizient Quality Executive Advisory Committee. Dr. Lu is passionate about health equity and social justice, and she founded and co-chairs the Stanford Medicine Health Equity Committee.  Dr. Lu received her BA in cultural anthropology and molecular biology from UC Berkeley, MD from UC San Francisco, and MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital and practices anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Stanford.

Chief Quality Officer Agenda

The IHI Chief Quality Officer Professional Development Program aims to demonstrate how to lead quality at a system level. Several elements need to be in place for that to happen.

At a foundational level, we will teach you how to:

Develop Infrastructure: To establish the systems and structures to support strategic quality
Create a Culture that Enables and Activates People: Create the activities and environment that support people to act

Once those support structures are in place, the emphasis turns to quality management. You’ll learn how to continuously:

All Scholarships are reviewed on an individual basis. If multiple individuals from the same organization wish to apply for a scholarship, everyone must submit an application. Group discounts are also available, see information above.

Cancellations, Refunds, Substitutions

Registration Fee of $2,950 or more

Payments: Full payment is due 60 days before the start of the program. If payment in full is not received within 60 days prior to the program start date, IHI will notify you and cancel your registration.

What Is the Breakthrough Series College?

The Breakthrough Series College is a powerful, hands-on, proven professional development program designed to teach you how to run effective BTS Collaboratives across your organization to improve outcomes for your patients, students, or clients. Challenges abound in healthcare, in education, and in social services – insufficient staffing, burnout, waste, and complex systems with unreliable processes. Fortunately, solutions also abound but they are often not being used reliably enough at the frontlines of patient care, in classrooms, and in our communities.

Learning Goals

Whether you are already planning a specific BTS Collaborative or are eager to learn how to identify when the right time is to leverage the methodology, the expert BTS College faculty will teach you the step-by-step process of launching, running, and closing a BTS.

Even if a traditional BTS Collaborative is not immediately in your future, participants find that the building blocks of the College can be very helpful in other improvement projects as well.

The College moves chronologically through the BTS process:

Selecting an effective and timely topic
Running a productive expert meeting
Selecting impactful faculty and staff
Creating the technical content needed (charter, driver diagram, change package, and measurement strategy)
Recruiting the right teams and engaging them in prework
Using and teaching the Model for Improvement as the execution model
Facilitating dynamic Learning Sessions
Maintaining momentum in the Action Periods
Assessing progress in the Collaborative and course-correcting as needed
Guiding, closing, and evaluating the Collaborative

Faculty

Kelly McCutcheon Adams, MSW, LICSW, is a Senior Director at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and has been with IHI since 2004. She is the Director (and co-faculty) of the IHI Breakthrough Series College and the Director of the IHI Chief Quality Officer Professional Development Program. Ms. McCutcheon Adams has led and coached many BTS Collaboratives and has taught in the United States, Denmark, UK, and Australia. She is a medical social worker with experience in hospice, nursing homes, sub-acute rehabilitation, emergency department, and ICU settings. Ms. McCutcheon Adams served as faculty for the Organ Donation Collaborative of the US Department of Health and Human Services and for the Gift of Life Institute.

Sue Butts-Dion is a quality improvement consultant with over 20 years of management consulting experience in health care. She successfully supports clients, including hospital systems and physician practices, in planning and implementing improvement objectives. Ms. Butts-Dion's practice areas include improvement planning, training, and group facilitation.

Even if a traditional BTS Collaborative is not immediately in your future, participants find that the building blocks of the College can be very helpful in other improvement projects as well.

This program consists of 4 live online sessions, 1 two-day in-person session, and self-paced activities to be completed outside of the live sessions. Self-paced activities between sessions are required and should take no longer than five hours to complete in total across the College.

This program is approved to provide 28 credits for physicians, nurses, and Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) recertification.

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP, FRCP, KBE, is President Emeritus and Senior Fellow at IHI, which he co-founded and led as President and CEO for 19 years. He is one of the nation’s leading authorities on health care quality and improvement and served under President Obama as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Maureen Bisognano is President Emerita and Senior Fellow at IHI. She served as IHI’s President and CEO for five years following her role as Executive Vice President and COO for 15 years. Maureen is a prominent authority on improving health care systems, whose expertise has been recognized by her elected membership to the National Academy of Medicine (IOM), among other distinctions.

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation scholarship criteria:

Successful candidates will have advanced training (MD, DO, advanced practice degree), doctoral/terminal degree in relevant discipline, or other significant qualifying experience) and possess a commitment to a career in improving diagnosis and addressing diagnostic error. Selection will be based on the candidate's qualifications and the quality of their proposed project.
Applicants should be a health care professional committed to a project to improve diagnostic excellence. Preference is generally given to US-based work; if otherwise, proposed projects should be relevant to the US health care system.
Candidate will have strong foundation knowledge and experience in quality, safety, and quality improvement capability.
Specific focus in pursuing a Strategic Impact Project in diagnostic excellence.

Overview

Building internal capability to support your organisation’s improvement strategy is an on-going effort. IHI’s Improvement Advisor Professional Development Programme is designed is develop the skills of improvement leaders to charter, lead, and achieve results on improvement projects. This year-long programme provides in-depth learning with three four-day in-person workshops (in London) and monthly calls with a small cohort of like-minded learners. Each participant will use a real-life real-time strategic improvement project in their own organisation to practice and consolidate learning.

Learning Goals

By the end of this programme, you will be able to:

Develop your skills in leading improvement efforts in your organisation
Achieve results in your improvement project
Use the system of profound knowledge to guide your work
Use Shewhart charts to understand variation
Develop projects informed by Planned Experimentation to understand the cause-and-effect system producing the outcomes

Each participant is required to direct one or more improvement projects (connected to her or his organisation’s business plan) throughout the programme.

The project provides a double benefit — a chance to achieve results in an active improvement project and a living laboratory to apply learning. The improvement project may be in any one of three categories:

Improving quality of care and services
Reducing costs while maintaining or improving quality
Expanding patient or customer satisfaction with the development of new services or innovative ways of providing existing services

The design of this programme allows participants to achieve maximum results by immediately applying the skills they learn to everyday work situations.

It is this combination of theory applied to daily work that makes the Improvement Advisor Professional Development Programme unique and provides a foundation for making improvements long after the programme is completed.

Who Should Attend

Health care professionals who are currently regarded as leaders of improvement efforts within the organisation and who want to deepen their knowledge and enhance their effectiveness in this role. Often these individuals hold titles such as:

Session Faculty

Amar Shah, MD, Dr Amar Shah is Consultant forensic psychiatrist & Chief Quality Officer at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT). He leads at executive and Board level at ELFT on quality, performance, strategy, planning, data and analytics. Amar has led the approach to quality at ELFT for the past 10 years, and has embedded a large-scale quality improvement infrastructure and quality management system, with demonstrable results across key areas of organisational performance. Amar is the first National Clinical Director for Improvement at NHS England, leading the application of improvement across England’s health and care system. He is the national improvement lead for mental health at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, leading a number of large-scale improvement collaboratives on topics such as restrictive practice, workforce wellbeing and equalities. Amar is chair of the Scientific Advisory Group at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and also acts as faculty with IHI, teaching and guiding improvers and healthcare systems across the world. He is a member of the Q advisory Board at the Health Foundation and a member of the reference group for the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare. He is on the health advisory board for the UCL global business school for health, and a Council member for the Healthcare Costing for Value Institute. He is honorary visiting professor at City University (London) and the University of Leicester. Amar has completed an executive MBA in healthcare management, a masters in mental health law and a postgraduate certificate in medical education. Amar is a regular national and international keynote speaker at healthcare improvement conferences and has published over 50 peer-review articles in the field of quality management. He was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2024 for services to healthcare improvement.

Rebecca Steinfield, MA, Senior Director and Improvement Advisor, has been with IHI since 1996. She currently serves as Director of IHI’s Improvement Advisor Professional Development Program, teaches IHI courses on improvement methods, and mentors “improvers-in-training.” Rebecca sits on IHI’s Improvement Science and Methods team and serves as an Improvement Advisor on results-oriented work.

Susan Hannah, Senior Director for Europe Region and Strategic Partners, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), has a background in high-care nursing and expertise as a leader for patient safety and clinical improvement in Scottish healthcare, responsible for the delivery of patient safety in a health system and as faculty for the national programme. A trained Improvement Advisor with IHI, she worked in the Scottish Government for 6 years, performing improvement and leadership roles to influence the adoption of quality strategies and improvement science in government policy teams and across public services. Susan led the design and delivery of a national Raising Attainment for All QI Collaborative for education, later amalgamating this with the Early Years Collaborative to establish and lead the Children and Young People Improvement Collaborative; a large-scale national programme that delivers multiagency quality improvement communities working to improve health and achievement outcomes across Scotland.

Robert Lloyd, PhD, Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), provides leadership in the areas of performance improvement strategies, building capacity and capability for improvement, statistical process control methods, and development of strategic dashboards. He also serves as faculty for various IHI initiatives and demonstration projects in the US and abroad. Before joining IHI, Dr. Lloyd served as the Corporate Director of Quality Resource Services for Advocate Health Care (Oakbrook, IL), Director of Quality Measurement for Lutheran General Health System, Senior Director at the Hospital Research and Educational Trust of AHA, and spent ten years with the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania in various leadership roles. He is author of numerous articles, reports, and books.

IHI’s Patient Safety Executive Program offers unique access to valuable planning support, including an in-person session with additional opportunities for participants to collaborate and learn from real-world experiences with fellow attendees.

Over the course of 7 weeks and 8 sessions (7 virtual, 1 in-person), participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to assess their organization's culture of safety, design strategic plans, develop continuous learning systems, and implement changes to improve safety.

This program is led by international experts in patient safety who have experience across the continuum of care. Many of these experts have established benchmark patient safety programs in their own organizations.

Lead Faculty

Frank Federico, Former Vice President and Senior Safety Expert, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), works in the areas of patient safety and the application of reliability principles in health care. He is faculty for the IHI Patient Safety Executive Development Program and has co-chaired a number of Patient Safety Collaboratives. Mr. Federico has authored numerous patient safety articles, co-authored a book chapter in Achieving Safe and Reliable Healthcare: Strategies and Solutions, and is an Executive Producer of "First, Do No Harm, Part 2: Taking the Lead." He coaches leaders and teams, and lectures extensively, nationally and internationally, on patient safety.

Jessica Behrhorst, MPH, CPPS, CPQH, CPHRM, Quality, Safety and HRO Consultant, Aptive Resources, works in the areas of patient safety, workforce safety, and high reliability. She is faculty for the IHI Patient Safety Executive Development Program and on Redesigning Event Review with Root Cause Analysis and Action (RCA2). Prior to Joining Aptive Resources she served as the Senior Director at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). She has also served as the Assistant Vice President of Quality & Patient Safety at Ochsner Health System where she helped set the strategic priorities in quality and patient safety and oversaw various projects involving patient safety, performance improvement, regulatory readiness, ambulatory nursing, and quality outcomes. She has presented her work on RCA2 and Improving the Culture of Safety at various regional and national meetings. She has also worked on research projects involving reduction in Sepsis mortality and access to healthcare for underserved populations. Jessica received her bachelor’s degree from Tulane University and her Master of Public Health Degree from the Louisiana State University School of Public Health. She is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS), a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).

Lauge Sokol-Hessner, MD, CPPS, is a practicing clinician, educator, researcher, innovator, and leader in patient safety & quality improvement. He’s an Associate Professor of Medicine and an attending hospitalist at the University of Washington (UW) & Harborview Medical Centers, and a Quality Improvement Mentor at the UW Medicine Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality and Safety. As the Associate Director for the UW Collaborative for Accountability and Improvement and a Faculty Coach for the PACT Collaborative, he helps lead national work to sustain and spread more proactive, ethical, person-centered responses after harm events. He has operational quality & safety experience as a former Senior Medical Director of Patient Safety at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. As IHI Faculty, and as a former quality and safety fellowship program director and masters program course director at Harvard Medical School, he's passionate about helping develop the next generation of leaders in quality and safety, and he regularly teaches about patient safety, quality improvement, and leadership. He completed his medical degree and internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania.

Guest Presenters

Carolyn L. Candiello joined GBMC HealthCare in October 2010 as Vice President for Quality and Patient Safety and serves as a member of the organization's Executive Team. A veteran of more than two decades in the healthcare industry, nearly half of that time spent in the quality, safety and patient satisfaction arena, Candiello has broad experience in performance improvement, risk management, medical staff services, patient safety and regulatory affairs. She has responsibility for leading the continuous improvement process of quality of care for patients across the GBMC HealthCare system and providing oversight for compliance and interactions with clinical regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Candiello served on the Board of Examiners for the National Baldridge Performance Excellence Program. Immediately prior to joining GBMC, Candiello served as the Director, Quality and Patient Safety at Holy Family Hospital, a 271-bed acute care hospital located in Methuen, Mass. She has also held quality and safety positions with a small not-for-profit system and with the University of Massachusetts healthcare system. Candiello earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and leadership from Fitchburg State College, earning summa cum laude honors. She also holds a Masters Degree in Leadership and Management from Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Moshe Cohen, MBA, Mediator and corporate trainer in private practice, as well as Senior Lecturer with Boston University, has been teaching, mediating, coaching, writing, and speaking on the topics of negotiation, leadership, change management, influence, conflict resolution, mediation, facilitation, and communication since 1995. Mr. Cohen founded The Negotiating Table, Inc. and has worked with many companies and organizations in the Boston area, as well as nationally and internationally. He teaches negotiation and leadership in the MBA and MSMS programs at Boston University where he has been teaching since 2000. As a mediator, Mr. Cohen specializes in employment, workplace, and discrimination-related disputes. Mr. Cohen has a background in Physics from Cornell University, a Masters in Electrical Engineering from McGill University and later received an MBA from Boston University.

Pat Folcarelli RN, MA, PhD is the Sr. Vice President for Patient Care Services and the Cynthia and Robert J. Lepofsky Chief Nursing Officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Pat rejoined BIDMC in November after serving for 3 years as Vice President for Patient Safety at CRICO the insurance captive for the 35 Harvard affiliated institutions. In her CRICO role Pat assisted with strategic and operational patient safety solutions. Prior to joining CRICO in 2020, Dr. Folcarelli worked in various roles at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) for more than 30 years both in nursing leadership roles and in the area of patient safety and health care quality finally serving as the Vice President for Health Care Quality.

Richard D. Guthrie, Jr., M.D., C.P.E. is the System Chief Quality Officer. As the Chief Quality Officer, Guthrie oversees the development and implementation of strategies and programs aimed at improving patient safety and quality for the health system. Dr. Guthrie previously served as the Regional Medical Director – New Orleans from 1999-2014. As Medical Director, Guthrie oversaw the physician group and was responsible for physician recruitment, clinical program development and professional affairs. Dr. Guthrie earned his
Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Orleans, summa cum laude, and graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School, Alpha Omega Alpha, in 1986. Dr. Guthrie received his internal medicine training, including residency and chief residency, at Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation.

Dr. David Munch has been an IHI faculty member for many years teaching in the Patient Safety Executive (PSE) program, Leading Quality Improvement, Engaging Managers in Quality (LQI) program, numerous IHI National Forums and many international IHI patient safety programs. In addition, he has helped numerous health systems over the past 12 years with their Lean quality improvement implementations. During that time, he has been an instructor for the Belmont University Lean Healthcare Certificate program and prior to that, the University of Michigan Lean Certificate program, focusing on leadership and management systems development. He served as the COO, CQO and CMO from 2000 to 2009 at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. He has an extensive background in health system operations and clinical practice and currently sits on The Quality Committee of the Board for The Children's Hospital of Colorado.

Lara Musser, DO, is the Deputy Chief Quality Officer at Jacobi and North Central Bronx Hospital, and a practicing Emergency Medicine Physician. She completed her residency at Metropolitan/Harlem Hospital in New York City, and completed the New York City Health + Hospitals Clinical Leadership Fellowship in the Office of Quality & Safety. She is dedicated to improving systemic issues facing our current health care system.

Jo Shapiro, MD, FACS, is an associate professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School. She is Senior Faculty for the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston and a Consultant for the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Anesthesia, Pain and Critical Care. In 2008, she founded the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Professionalism and Peer Support where she served as the director for over 10 years. During that time the Center became a model for national and international institutions seeking methods to enhance a culture of trust and respect and improve clinician wellbeing. She continues to educate and assist organizations in developing speciﬁc programmatic and educational approaches such as peer support, professionalism initiatives, and wellbeing programs. She served as chair of the Ethics and Professionalism Committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties and has held multiple educational leadership roles including: senior associate director of Graduate Medical Education for Partners HealthCare, founding scholar of the Academy at Harvard Medical School, and president of the Society of University Otolaryngologists. She was one of BWH's ﬁrst woman division chiefs. She serves on the faculty of the Harvard Leadership Development for Physicians and Scientists. She was a faculty member of the Department of Surgery at BWH for over 35 years; her surgical expertise was in treating adults with oropharyngeal dysphagia. She was named as a ﬁnalist for the Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award. In 2019, Harvard Medical School gave her the Shirley Driscoll Dean's Award for the Enhancement of Women's Careers.

Dr. Ronald Wyatt, Vice President and Patient Safety Officer, joined MCIC Vermont in 2020 as Vice President and Patient Safety Officer. He is nationally recognized in the United States as an expert in patient safety, and several times has been named by Becker's as one of the "Top 50 Patient Safety Experts" in the US. Ron currently serves as co-chair of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Equity Advisory Group. He presents nationally and internationally on leadership, safety culture, safety event analysis, human factors in health care, patient experience, and health equity. He is also a member of the ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) committee and serves on several boards, including the IHI Certified Professional in Patient Safety and the Society to Prevent Diagnostic Error. He is a credentialed course instructor in the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Ron was the first Patient Safety Officer at the Joint Commission. In 2010, Ron was appointed Director of the Patient Safety Analysis Center in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), now the Defense Health Agency. Most recently, he was Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer at Cook County Health. Ron is a graduate of the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine and holds an executive master's degree in health administration from the University of Alabama Birmingham. He was a 2009-2010 Merck Fellow at IHI.

This program is approved to provide 50 credits for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) recertification.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement designates this live activity for a maximum of 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Tuition

Tuition rate is USD $25,000 per Fellow and may be funded organizationally or individually. Applicants should ensure they have funding in place prior to applying. Tuition will be invoiced once Fellows are notified of their acceptance into the program and is due upon receipt.

Cancellations and Refunds

For cancellations made within 45 days before the start of a program: Registration fees are fully refundable if a written request is received by info@ihi.org on or before 45 days before the start of the program.

Lead Faculty

Dr. Amar Shah, is Consultant forensic psychiatrist & Chief Quality Officer at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT). He leads at executive and Board level at ELFT on quality, performance, strategy, planning, data and analytics. Amar has led the approach to quality at ELFT for the past 10 years, and has embedded a large-scale quality improvement infrastructure and quality management system, with demonstrable results across key areas of organisational performance.

Amar is the first National Clinical Director for Improvement at NHS England, leading the application of improvement across England’s health and care system. He is the national improvement lead for mental health at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, leading a number of large-scale improvement collaboratives on topics such as restrictive practice, workforce wellbeing and equalities. Amar is chair of the Scientific Advisory Group at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and also acts as faculty with IHI, teaching and guiding improvers and healthcare systems across the world. He is a member of the Q advisory Board at the Health Foundation and a member of the reference group for the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare. He is on the health advisory board for the UCL global business school for health, and a Council member for the Healthcare Costing for Value Institute. He is honorary visiting professor at City University (London) and the University of Leicester. Amar has completed an executive MBA in healthcare management, a masters in mental health law and a postgraduate certificate in medical education. Amar is a regular national and international keynote speaker at healthcare improvement conferences and has published over 50 peer-review articles in the field of quality management.

Diane Murray, was Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO) at Scottish Government from 2016 until November 2021. Currently she is working on a part-time basis to support the Scottish Government Social Care Team with work in relation to the development of a new National Care Service. Diane has nursing and midwifery experience in acute and community settings. In her DCNO role Diane had professional leadership responsibility across the many spectrums of Adult Nursing, and was also the nursing lead for quality, safety, and leadership development. Believing that staff is the greatest asset in the pursuit of quality, Diane was proud to lead work on behalf of Scottish Government to enshrine both staff governance and health and care staffing in law in Scotland. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked with clinical colleagues and policy officers as one of the senior clinicians to support the many efforts required in relation to the pandemic. From 2008 to 2016, Diane was an Assistant Nurse Director for Quality Improvement and Safety in a health system. In this role she led the quality and safety programme within the organisation. Key results in this role were demonstrable and sustained improvements in safety and quality and building organisational capacity and capability for improvement.

This programme will share best practices, case studies, and real-world experiences of leading for quality to enable participants to build skills and knowledge through facilitated exercises and project-based learning. As a leader responsible for quality, you will need to engage and partner with your board and senior leadership colleagues. You will need to design an approach and infrastructure to support the delivery of high-quality, continuously improving care and improve what matters for your local population.

The IHI Chief Quality Officer UK Professional Development Programme aims to demonstrate how to apply quality management best practices at a system level across an organisation.

Course preparation materials will be available one month before the start of Session 1.

Support activities will be provided between the online sessions and referenced during the online and in-person sessions.

Registration Fees

Regular Rate: USD $6,665 per person

Group Rate: USD $5,665 per person (15% off)

Organisations sending three or more participants are eligible to receive the group rate. To register a group, please complete the Group Registration form.

Scholarships

IHI is pleased to offer a limited number of free and 25% scholarships to assist with program registration costs for those working in:

Independent, United States Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that are not affiliated with a hospital or health system
Critical Access Hospitals
Independent practices with fewer than 20 physicians
Hospitals with fewer than 50 beds
Members of America's Essential Hospitals
501(c)(3) organization with a defined operating budget of less than $5 million, serving community-based populations
Ministries of Health
Faith-based health institutions
Skilled Nursing Facilities

To ensure equal distribution of funds, all scholarships applications are reviewed using the same scoring criteria. All awarded amounts are final.

Please complete the online Scholarship Application by 1 December 2024. IHI will not consider applications submitted after this date. IHI will notify all applicants of their scholarship status by 21 December 2024.

Cancellations, Substitutions, and Refunds

Payments: Full payment is due 60 days before the start of the program. If payment in full is not received within 60 days prior to the program start date, IHI will notify you and cancel your registration.
- Credit card payments: Enter your credit card information online during the registration process, or call the IHI Customer Experience Department to process payment over the phone.
- Check payments: Please mail a copy of the invoice with your check made payable to IHI.
Cancellations: For cancellations made within 45 days before the start of a program: Registration fees are fully refundable if a written request is received by info@ihi.org on or before 45 days before the start of the program.
Refunds: IHI will issue all refunds in the original payment type (credit card or check) within 30 days. Registrations received after 45 days or less before the start of the program are not refundable.
Substitutions: One attendee may be substituted for another at any time by calling the IHI Customer Experience Department or emailing info@ihi.org.
