Apply Global Best Practices to Quality Management across Systems
This programme will share best practices, case studies, and real-world experiences of leading for quality to enable participants to build skills and knowledge through facilitated exercises and project-based learning. As a leader responsible for quality, you will need to engage and partner with your board and senior leadership colleagues. You will need to design an approach and infrastructure to support the delivery of high-quality, continuously improving care and improve what matters for your local population.
US-based leaders can register for the next US offering of the Chief Quality Officer Professional Development Program.
Agenda
The IHI Chief Quality Officer UK Professional Development Programme aims to demonstrate how to apply quality management best practices at a system level across an organisation.
Course preparation materials will be available one month before the start of Session 1.
Support activities will be provided between the online sessions and referenced during the online and in-person sessions.

Regular Rate: USD $6,665 per person
Group Rate: USD $5,665 per person (15% off)
Organisations sending three or more participants are eligible to receive the group rate. To register a group, please complete the Group Registration form.
Scholarships
IHI is pleased to offer a limited number of free and 25% scholarships to assist with program registration costs for those working in:
- Independent, United States Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that are not affiliated with a hospital or health system
- Critical Access Hospitals
- Independent practices with fewer than 20 physicians
- Hospitals with fewer than 50 beds
- Members of America's Essential Hospitals
- 501(c)(3) organization with a defined operating budget of less than $5 million, serving community-based populations
- Ministries of Health
- Faith-based health institutions
- Skilled Nursing Facilities
All Scholarships are reviewed on an individual basis. If multiple individuals from the same organization wish to apply for a scholarship, everyone must submit an application. Group discounts are also available, see information above.
To ensure equal distribution of funds, all scholarships applications are reviewed using the same scoring criteria. All awarded amounts are final.
Please complete the online Scholarship Application by 1 December 2025. IHI will not consider applications submitted after this date. IHI will notify all applicants of their scholarship status by 21 December 2025.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all session materials may be available for viewing. Only materials that have been submitted previously by presenters before a program will be made accessible to attendees.
Cancellations, Substitutions, and Refunds
- Payments: Full payment is due 60 days before the start of the program. If payment in full is not received within 60 days prior to the program start date, IHI will notify you and cancel your registration.
- Credit card payments: Enter your credit card information online during the registration process, or call the IHI Customer Experience Department to process payment over the phone.
- Check payments: Please mail a copy of the invoice with your check made payable to IHI.
- Cancellations: For cancellations made within 45 days before the start of a program: Registration fees are fully refundable if a written request is received by info@ihi.org on or before 45 days before the start of the program.
- Refunds: IHI will issue all refunds in the original payment type (credit card or check) within 30 days. Registrations received after 45 days or less before the start of the program are not refundable.
- Substitutions: One attendee may be substituted for another at any time by calling the IHI Customer Experience Department or emailing info@ihi.org.
Unconditional Guarantee
If for any reason you are not completely satisfied that your attendance in an IHI educational program is a valuable experience, IHI will gladly refund your registration fee per the policies noted above. Please note that due to unforeseeable circumstances, last-minute changes in program titles, speakers, or presentations may be unavoidable.
Brenda Carson, Senior Professional Officer at the Northern Ireland Practice & Education Council for Nurses and Midwives, began her nursing career in 1986 in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and worked in a number of nursing positions across South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland before taking up post as Patient Safety Officer in 2005. Brenda has trained with IHI as a Patient Safety Officer, an Improvement Coach and an Improvement Advisor and progressed to the role of Senior Lead Nurse for Patient Safety and Quality Improvement leading a number of improvement initiatives across the organization and managing a Quality Improvement Academy within the organization to build Improvement Science capacity and capability at all levels of Health and Social Care. At the end of 2023 Brenda took up a new role as a Senior Professional Officer within the Northern Ireland Practice & Education Council for Nurses and Midwives. Brenda has twice been awarded the Northern Ireland RCN Chief Nursing Officers award for Patient Safety in 2007 and 2014. In her free time Brenda loves to spend time with her 2 grandchildren and walking with her dog Molly. 
Susan Hannah, Senior Director for Europe Region and Strategic Partners, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), has a background in high-care nursing and expertise as a leader for patient safety and clinical improvement in Scottish healthcare, responsible for the delivery of patient safety in a health system and as faculty for the national programme. A trained Improvement Advisor with IHI, she worked in the Scottish Government for 6 years, performing improvement and leadership roles to influence the adoption of quality strategies and improvement science in government policy teams and across public services. Susan led the design and delivery of a national Raising Attainment for All QI Collaborative for education, later amalgamating this with the Early Years Collaborative to establish and lead the Children and Young People Improvement Collaborative; a large-scale national programme that delivers multiagency quality improvement communities working to improve health and achievement outcomes across Scotland.
Amar Shah, MD, Dr Amar Shah is Consultant forensic psychiatrist & Chief Quality Officer at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT). He leads at executive and Board level at ELFT on quality, performance, strategy, planning, data and analytics. Amar has led the approach to quality at ELFT for the past 10 years, and has embedded a large-scale quality improvement infrastructure and quality management system, with demonstrable results across key areas of organisational performance. Amar is the first National Clinical Director for Improvement at NHS England, leading the application of improvement across England’s health and care system. He is the national improvement lead for mental health at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, leading a number of large-scale improvement collaboratives on topics such as restrictive practice, workforce wellbeing and equalities. Amar is chair of the Scientific Advisory Group at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and also acts as faculty with IHI, teaching and guiding improvers and healthcare systems across the world. He is a member of the Q advisory Board at the Health Foundation and a member of the reference group for the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare. He is on the health advisory board for the UCL global business school for health, and a Council member for the Healthcare Costing for Value Institute. He is honorary visiting professor at City University (London) and the University of Leicester. Amar has completed an executive MBA in healthcare management, a masters in mental health law and a postgraduate certificate in medical education. Amar is a regular national and international keynote speaker at healthcare improvement conferences and has published over 50 peer-review articles in the field of quality management. He was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2024 for services to healthcare improvement.
Rebecca Steinfield, MA, Senior Director and Improvement Advisor, has been with IHI since 1996. She currently serves as Director of IHI’s Improvement Advisor Professional Development Program, teaches IHI courses on improvement methods, and mentors “improvers-in-training.” Rebecca sits on IHI’s Improvement Science and Methods team and serves as an Improvement Advisor on results-oriented work. 
Robert Lloyd, PhD, Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), provides leadership in the areas of performance improvement strategies, building capacity and capability for improvement, statistical process control methods, and development of strategic dashboards. He also serves as faculty for various IHI initiatives and demonstration projects in the US and abroad. Before joining IHI, Dr. Lloyd served as the Corporate Director of Quality Resource Services for Advocate Health Care (Oakbrook, IL), Director of Quality Measurement for Lutheran General Health System, Senior Director at the Hospital Research and Educational Trust of AHA, and spent ten years with the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania in various leadership roles. He is author of numerous articles, reports, and books.
