This initiative is completed — began in April 2017 and ended in March 2019.
Pursuing Equity is a two-year initiative, launched in April 2017, that aims to reduce inequities in health and health care access, treatment, and outcomes by implementing comprehensive strategies to create and sustain equitable health systems.
Eight health care organizations — diverse in size, geography, and patient populations served — are working with IHI to apply practical improvement methods and tools, spread ideas in peer-to-peer learning, and disseminate results and lessons to support an ongoing national dialogue and action for improving health equity.
A Blueprint to Advance Health Equity
The goal of Pursuing Equity is to lay the groundwork for a national initiative that identifies ways health care organizations can impact equity in areas like employee wellness and social determinants of health, in addition to reducing clinical disparities at the point of care.
Making health equity a strategic priority is one of five key recommendations in the IHI White Paper,
Achieving Health Equity: A Guide for Health Care Organizations. The framework presented in the white paper serves as the starting point for the work of the Pursuing Equity initiative.
