The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) offers review courses — offered as live webinars on scheduled dates and available on demand at any time — to experienced patient safety professionals who plan to take the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) examination. The CPPS Review Course can help participants prepare for the CPPS exam by reviewing domain content areas and test-taking strategies. The CPPS Review Course is not required to pass the CPPS certification exam. Participation in any of these courses does not guarantee a passing score on the certification exam.

Faculty

Dr.Hertig has lectured and published on a variety of leadership, administration, patient safety, and health policy topics, and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. He holds various national and international appointments, including advisory roles with the US Food and Drug Administration and the International Pharmaceutical Federation, where he is also Vice President of the Americas for the Hospital Pharmacy Section. Dr. Hertig is a member of the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies – Global (ASOP), where he leads efforts to reduce the patient safety impact of illegal and counterfeit online drug distribution worldwide. He was awarded the ASOP Global Patient Safety Champion Award in 2018. He has served as President of the Indiana Society of Health-System Pharmacists and is a Past Chair of the Council on Public Policy for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Dr. Hertig received the Glen J. Sperandio award, honoring the Indiana Health-System Pharmacist of the year, the "Excellence in Innovation" Award, and the Medication Safety Pharmacist of the Year award in the State of Indiana.

Erin Graydon Baker, is a retired Patient Safety and Risk Management Professional.

She is a registered respiratory therapist with 20 years of clinical experience. She transitioned from her position as Director for Respiratory Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to begin a career in Patient Safety in 1999 as the Education Director for the Boston Center for Medical Simulation.

After 3 years in teaching medical personnel about medical errors at the Simulation Center, Erin continued her work in Patient Safety as the Director for Patient Safety at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and then as Program Director for Patient Safety across the Partners Hospital System.

After moving to Maine, she spent a year as the lead for Quality and Patient Safety at York Hospital and several years as Director for Risk Management and Patient Safety at Maine Medical Center. In 2019, she joined MaineHealth Integrated Quality and Safety Department as the Clinical Risk Manager to help drive safety and mitigate risk throughout the MaineHealth system. She retired from this role in December of 2022 but remains as faculty for the IHI and member Emeritus in the Northern New England Society for Risk Management.

She has her Respiratory Therapy degree from Northeastern University and her graduate degree in Training and Human Resource Development from Lesley University. Erin participated with 15 other Patient Safety Professionals from across the country in writing the content for the Certification for Professionals in Patient Safety offered by the National Patient Safety Foundation. Erin completed the Advisory Board Fellowship in 2019. She also holds a Lean/6 Sigma Green Belt.

Continuing Education

In support of improving patient care, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Continuing education credits for this program are still being finalized and will be updated shortly.

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

Review the five patient safety domains, following the exam content outline
Discuss patient safety scenario examples similar to actual exam questions
Assess their own level of preparedness for the exam and address additional areas for self-study

CE Instructions

In order to be eligible for a continuing education certificate, attendees must complete the online evaluation within 30 days of the continuing education activity. After this period, you will be unable to receive a certificate.

Continuing education credits will not be awarded for non-educational activities, including (but not limited to) meals, breaks, and receptions.

Any professional working in or around health care who can demonstrate need is encouraged to apply. Applicants must also possess academic and professional experience at one of the following levels:

Baccalaureate degree or higher, plus three years of experience (includes time spent in clinical rotations and residency programs) in a health care setting or with a provider of services to the health care industry

Associate degree or equivalent plus five years of experience (includes time spent in clinical rotations) in a health care setting or with a provider of services to the health care industry

The CPPS credential distinguishes health care professionals who meet the competency requirements in the areas of patient safety science and human factors engineering and who demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge to plan and implement patient safety initiatives effectively.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellation requests may be submitted in writing at CPPS@ihi.org. Requests received 72 hours (3 business days) before the scheduled start time will receive a full refund. Refund requests submitted less than 72 hours (3 business days) before the scheduled start time will be ineligible for a refund.

Handouts

Handouts for this course will be sent to registered course attendees a few days before the course date. Handouts will not be given onsite for live courses; therefore, attendees are responsible for printing or downloading them before the course. Attendees are encouraged to bring their computers to the live courses.
