Tackling Systemic Racism in Maternity Care

IHI and Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein are using improvement science to reduce maternal mortality in 19 public-hospital, maternity-care units across Brazil. The collaborative has a particular focus on addressing racial bias that adversely affects the care and health outcomes of Black and Indigenous pregnant women. The Model for Improvement, the IHI Breakthrough Series Collaborative model, and the IHI Psychology of Change Framework are being used to provide a structured process for change in participating hospitals.

The initiative was a partnership between the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health.
