The authors of this study find that the Medicare policy to cease payment for hospitalizations resulting in complications deemed preventable, including several healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), appears to drive hospital infection prevention efforts. It remains unclear, however, whether greater engagement in HAI prevention practices has led to better patient outcomes.
