This article makes the case that standardizing processes, enhancing efficiency, and optimizing capacity across care delivery systems are all essential in driving value and preparing care teams for managing patients in a bundled payment program. The authors share examples from organizations working to reduce costs and improve care for joint replacement, one of the most common conditions in the Medicare population. That’s why the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has chosen total joint replacement as its first test of a new payment model using bundled payment and quality measures. The article also highlights five key leadership considerations for successfully transitioning toward bundled payments.
