Despite markedly different systems, some healthcare providers in the US have successfully combined quality improvements with savings to the bottom line. As quality improvement fellows from the UK, Judith Strobl and Tricia Woodhead spent a year studying and learning at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. This article discusses their observations from their time in the US and outlines six common themes they saw in successful organizations.
