Ensure That Allergy Information Accompanies Patients

Allergy information is important in preventing adverse drug events and must be available to anyone in the hospital who may order or administer medications. Within the hospital setting, a patient will often leave the patient care unit for tests and procedures or may be transferred to several different units during a hospital stay. Allergy information must accompany a patient to these different settings and be readily accessible to all caregivers who have contact with the patient.

Tips

  • Provide allergy information in several places, such as on the front of the patient record and on the patient identification band.
