Apply Global Best Practices to Quality Management across Systems

If you are ready to be responsible for quality at the highest levels of your organisation, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)’s Quality Leaders Professional Development Programme, beginning 22 January 2024, will help you develop and refine the skills you need. Whether you’re a Chief Quality Officer (CQO) already or in a quality leadership role with aims to advance, this professional development programme will enable you to develop the executive leadership skills required to put quality and safety at the top of the priority list for your organisation. 

Learning Goals

As part of your participation in this programme, the IHI team will:

Lead you through a framework to help your organisation and your board focus on quality as a system
Coach you on strategically planning for quality and how to design rigorous system-wide improvement initiatives
Advise you on sustaining and managing gains while engaging your people

Over the course of 10 months, which will consist of two in-person sessions in London, UK, and Edinburgh, UK, and monthly virtual calls, the programme will offer you:

Project-based learning to help you establish an effective quality management system built on quality planning, quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement
Real-world examples of best practices, approaches, and methods to apply in your own setting
A grounding in improvement science and the latest methodologies for leading quality across an organisation
Case studies and advice from executive leaders about how they are leading this work across diverse organisations — and how you can, too 
A unique network of quality leader peers for support during the course and after you return home

Who Should Attend

Faculty

Amar Shah, MD, is Consultant forensic psychiatrist & Chief Quality Officer at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT). He leads at executive and Board level at ELFT on quality, performance, strategy, planning and business intelligence. Amar has led the approach to quality at ELFT for the past 10 years, and has embedded a large-scale quality improvement infrastructure and quality management system, with demonstrable results across key areas of organisational performance. He is the national improvement lead for mental health at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, leading a number of large-scale improvement collaboratives on the topics of suicide prevention, restrictive practice, sexual safety and joy in work. Amar is also chair of the quality improvement faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Amar is an improvement advisor and faculty member for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, teaching and guiding improvers and health care systems across the world. He is honorary visiting professor at City University (London) and the University of Leicester. Amar has completed an executive MBA in healthcare management, a masters in mental health law and a postgraduate certificate in medical education. Amar is a regular national and international keynote speaker at health care improvement conferences and has published more than 40 peer-review articles in the field of quality management.

Diane Murray was Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO) at Scottish Government from 2016 until November 2021. Currently she is working on a part-time basis to support the Scottish Government Social Care Team with work in relation to the development of a new National Care Service. Diane has nursing and midwifery experience in acute and community settings. In her DCNO role Diane had professional leadership responsibility across the many spectrums of Adult Nursing, and was also the nursing lead for quality, safety, and leadership development. Believing that staff is the greatest asset in the pursuit of quality, Diane was proud to lead work on behalf of Scottish Government to enshrine both staff governance and health and care staffing in law in Scotland. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked with clinical colleagues and policy officers as one of the senior clinicians to support the many efforts required in relation to the pandemic. From 2008 to 2016, Diane was an Assistant Nurse Director for Quality Improvement and Safety in a health system. In this role she led the quality and safety programme within the organisation. Key results in this role were demonstrable and sustained improvements in safety and quality and building organisational capacity and capability for improvement.

This programme will share best practices, case studies, and real-world experiences of leading for quality to enable participants to build skills and knowledge through facilitated exercises and project-based learning. As a leader responsible for quality, you will need to engage and partner with your board and senior leadership colleagues. You will need to design an approach and infrastructure to support the delivery of high-quality, continuously improving care and improve what matters for your local population.

Agenda

The IHI Chief Quality Officer UK Professional Development Programme aims to demonstrate how to apply quality management best practices at a system level across an organisation.

Course preparation materials will be available one month before the start of Session 1.

Support activities will be provided between the online sessions and referenced during the online and in-person sessions.

In-person workshops are planned for 12-13 March 2024 in London, UK, and 11-12 September 2024 in Edinburgh, UK.

Organizations sending three or more participants are eligible to receive the group rate. To register a group, please complete the Group Registration form.

Scholarships

IHI is pleased to offer a limited number of 15%, 25%, and 50% scholarships to assist with program registration costs for those working in:

Independent, United States Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that are not affiliated with a hospital or health system
Critical Access Hospitals
Independent practices with fewer than 20 physicians
Hospitals with fewer than 50 beds
Members of America's Essential Hospitals
501(c)(3) organization with a defined operating budget of less than $5 million, serving community-based populations
Ministries of Health
Faith-based health institutions
Care homes

To Apply

IHI will review all Scholarships on an individual basis. If multiple individuals from the same organization wish to apply for a scholarship, each individual must submit an application. Group discounts are also available, see information below.

To ensure equal distribution of funds, IHI will review all scholarship applications using the same scoring criteria. All awarded amounts are final.

Please note, scholarships are available for program registration costs only, and do not cover travel, food, or accommodation costs associated with attending a program.

Cancellations, Substitutions, and Refunds

Payments: Full payment is due 60 days before the start of the program. If payment in full is not received within 60 days prior to the program start date, IHI will notify you and cancel your registration.
- Credit card payments: Enter your credit card information online during the registration process, or call the IHI Customer Experience Department to process payment over the phone.
- Check payments: Please mail a copy of the invoice with your check made payable to IHI.
Cancellations: For cancellations made within 45 days before the start of a program: Registration fees are fully refundable if a written request is received by info@ihi.org on or before 45 days before the start of the program.
Refunds: IHI will issue all refunds in the original payment type (credit card or check) within 30 days. Registrations received after 45 days or less before the start of the program are not refundable.
Substitutions: One attendee may be substituted for another at any time by calling the IHI Customer Experience Department or emailing info@ihi.org.

Unconditional Guarantee

If for any reason you are not completely satisfied that your attendance in an IHI educational program is a valuable experience, IHI will gladly refund your registration fee per the policies noted above. Please note that due to unforeseeable circumstances, last-minute changes in program titles, speakers, or presentations may be unavoidable.
