Dr. Shapiro will use a combination of simulations, small group exercises, reflection, role modeling, didactics, and discussion to engage participants in this session. This portion of the day is designed to not only provide the basics of peer support but to look deeper into the many emotional barriers that confront clinicians and how we can all work to overcome these challenges and create a culture of mindfulness and trust in our institutions.

This session will provide attendees with a solid foundation in the principles, themes, and lessons learned from Respectful Management of Serious Clinical Adverse Events, an IHI Innovation Series White Paper. This presentation will establish the critical need for support for the “second victim” and set the tone for the remainder of the two day workshop.

​In this portion, faculty will describe the impact of unexpected patient outcomes on health care clinicians and describe ideas for helping to mitigate the suffering both from an individual and team member perspective. Small groups will share professional experiences and describe the recovery trajectory for second victims.

Participants will learn methods to provide one-on-one support, tips for engaging in crucial conversations, and self-care stress management tips in this section. ​

1:00 PM - 1:45 PM Review of Special Considerations and Overcoming Obstacles for the Clinician Support Team

In this portion, we will review team implementation strategies, review the checklist to help guide your work, and will discuss various methods for addressing obstacles to team deployment.

Attendees will have the opportunity to work in small groups in order to form an implementation plan to put into place upon return to their home organizations.​
