Session Agenda

Program Agenda

The curriculum is built around both theory and practical skills applied to the participants' improvement projects. The foundational theories include W.E. Deming's System of Profound Knowledge and The Model for Improvement (developed by Associates in Process Improvement).

Key Topics

  • Understanding Systems and Processes: Appreciation of a system; defining system and purpose; using driver diagrams to better understand the system and key interactions.

  • Defining Aims and Measures: Framing a challenging yet realistic project aim; creating a comprehensive, balanced measurement plan.

  • Focus on Data for Improvement: Understanding variation using both qualitative and quantitative data; learning methods for obtaining, organizing and displaying data and statistical process control (SPC) for analyzing data (run charts and Shewhart control charts). Principles for effective visual display of data will be explored.

  • Developing Powerful Ideas for Change: Honing several methods for developing changes that can lead to improvement including creative brainstorming.

  • Testing Changes: Determining the appropriate scale for a test of change and effectively planning the appropriate steps.

  • Implementing, Sustaining, and Spreading Changes: Gaining the expertise to know when to move from testing to implementation, how to build proven changes into the fabric of the organization, and how to hold the gains.

  • Teamwork, Communication, and Culture: The role of teamwork and communication in improvement; the nature of organizational culture and how it influences improvement work.
