Looking for Some Inspiration? Meet Ukraine’s First Open School Chapter

By IHI Open School | Tuesday, October 16, 2018
A new Chapter at VN Karazin University in Ukraine is gaining momentum after celebrating its kick-off event in September, serving as an inspiring example to others in the country, region, and across our Chapter Network. But don’t take it from us – hear what they have to say below:

The lead, Benyah Samuel, a student at VN Karazin University, shares more about the encounter that spurred him to start the Chapter, and what big plans the group is excited to take on next!

What motivated you to start the Open School Chapter at VN Karazin University?

I was inspired to start after the IHI/BMJ International Forum on Quality and Safety in Health Care in Amsterdam in May. Meeting with Dr. Don Berwick and attending the Open School sessions with the students from around the world, underscored the necessary role we can play as change agents even while we are in university and before we have begun our medical professions. The introduction to quality and safety, and the significance it could be play in my – and other students – professional careers was very impactful.

I immediately recognized the need for quality and safety education and work at my university and knew I couldn’t keep this to myself! I had to tell my friends and peers about the IHI Open School when I returned to Ukraine.

What does your Chapter hope to accomplish in its first year? What are your members excited to do together?

We are very optimistic and look forward to a growing our Chapter to at least 100 members in the next year. Since we are pioneering the Open School in Kharkov City (and Ukraine as a whole!), we want to establish work that aligns with the core values of IHI and serve as a voice for its vision and mission. Plans and strategies are in place to collaborate with nearby universities to build a stronger local community of student improvers.

Long term, we hope to continue to build our relationships with faculty members and established an internship and exchange program with organizations both inside and outside Ukraine.

We are ready to roll out our quality improvement work together!
