Think you’re an enthusiastic champion of quality improvement? Then you haven’t met the students and residents at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

In a new video from the IHI Open School Chapter in New Delhi, learners working in neonatology and pediatrics share their experiences learning about quality improvement from the Open School courses, and what the learning has meant to them. For example:

• Dr. Mayank Priyadarshi, a neonatology resident leading a project to reduce prescription errors, describes quality improvement as “a common-sense approach done in a systematic way.” He appreciates that quality improvement is a low-resource approach that can produce results quickly — critical in a resource-limited setting such as India.

• Dr. Aakanksha Sharma, a junior resident in the pediatrics department, thinks quality improvement is relevant to every field, but most urgent in the clinical setting, where lives are at stake. Dr. Sharma believes learners should aspire to make quality improvement part of their regular routine, rather than seeing it as an extra task. Her interest in quality improvement was sparked by her mother, who heard the success stories of quality improvement projects on the neonatology unit.

• Dr. Meena Joshi, a nurse educator at AIIMS, says the opportunity to earn certificates through the Open School is motivating to her students, and the free access to the online modules for students, residents, and faculty makes the learning accessible across her organization.
