Scientific Symposium

The IHI Scientific Symposium (part of the IHI Forum) aims to attract the best work in the science of improvement in health and health care. The Symposium features a mix of keynote presentations, interactive methods sessions on new and foundational scientific approaches to improvement, and oral presentations and poster presentations featuring both applied improvement and improvement methods work. Top rated proposals will be published in BMJ Open Quality. 

The IHI Scientific Symposium will take place on December 15 and is part of the online IHI Forum experience only. The recording will be made available to in-person attendees on-demand after December 15.


Call for Session Proposals - Online Scientific Symposium
The IHI Scientific Symposium team are looking for proposal submissions for oral presentations that showcase either: 
  • Applied Improvement: applications of scientific methods to health and health care improvement   
  • Improvement Methods: developing the methodological basis of improving health and health care

​ Who ​Should Attend

We aim to convene a community of improvement researchers and practitioners interested in the scientific basis of improvement to:

  • Interact with colleagues and share what has been learned from applying scientific methods to health and health care improvement
  • Discuss challenges in applying and disseminating scientific approaches to health and health care improvement
  • Build shared learning of how to apply scientific methods to improve health and health care as well as how to improve and expand the methods, themselves

We invite you to attend if you are:

  • Involved with the design or execution of quality and safety improvement and implementation initiatives, e.g., Improvement Advisors, Implementation leads, Directors of Quality & Safety, Department Leaders, Clinicians, Epidemiologists, Scientists, Researchers, Statisticians
  • Responsible for understanding the processes and results and identifying the learning from improvement and implementation initiatives, e.g., Evaluators, Analysts, Researchers, Instructors, Professors, Students, Lecturers, Deans
  • Seeking to share or publish improvement work and related methods: e.g., Medical or Public Health Students, Residents, Fellows, Nurse Researchers, Researchers
