December 06, 2022: IHI Forum Convenes with Call to Action for a System-wide Approach to Health Equity
Dr. Kedar Mate, President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), kicked-off the IHI Forum 2022 today by calling for collective action to address health equity. He urged the audience of health and health care professionals to change the narrative around inequities, “to understand them not as inevitabilities, but as things that we can, in fact, improve. Inequity in American health care is not our destiny, equity is.”

September 27, 2022: IHI Awards $16.5 Million in Grants from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts to Improve Health Equity in Massachusetts
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has awarded $16.5 million in Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA)-funded grants to 12 health systems across Massachusetts. The grants will fund projects to improve equity of care and race, ethnicity, and language data collection practices.

September 13, 2022: IHI Invites Health Systems to Participate in Learning Network, Action Community on Equity, Racial Justice in Health Care
Building off the success and lessons of two previous Pursuing Equity cohorts dating back to 2017, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is now accepting applications for its new Pursuing Equity Learning Network and Action Community that will run from January 2023-June 2024. For the first time, engagement in Pursuing Equity will be free to participating teams thanks to a grant from Genentech, a member of the Roche Group.

May 19, 2022: IHI Adds Renowned Leaders in Patient Safety, Public Health to Board of Directors
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has added two new members to its Board of Directors. Rear Admiral retired Sylvia Trent-Adams has a legacy of work in federal service and public health and has served as Deputy Surgeon General and Acting Surgeon General. Beth Daley Ullem is a life-long patient safety advocate with deep expertise working with health system leaders and boards to improve the quality and safety of patient care.

Representatives from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) – three member organization of the IHI-convened National Steering Committee for Patient Safety (NSC) – discussed the importance of national level coordination to address patient and workforce safety across the continuum of care at the IHI Patient Safety Congress.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the IHI Lucian Leape Institute (LLI) share our deepest sympathies with the family of Charlene Murphey for their tragic loss. While we are relieved that Ms. RaDonda Vaught did not receive a prison sentence, we remain disappointed and deeply concerned about the criminalization of error in medicine, which offers no remedy for improving patient safety. In fact, Ms. Vaught’s arrest and conviction makes patients less safe.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) announced that more than 2,700 care locations have been recognized as Age-Friendly Health Systems Participants, surpassing the movement’s goal 18-months ahead of schedule. More than 1.4 million older adults have received age-friendly care thanks to the Age-Friendly Health Systems movement since 2018.
