Some highlights of measures and results from the work of the MaiKhanda project are described below.
- A 45% reduction in Maternal Case Fatality Rate in target CEmOC facilities, from 349 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2006-8, to 195 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2009 despite a 50% increase in deliveries (3,432 deliveries per month, against 2006 baseline of 2,315).
- Sustained improvement in Neonatal Case Fatality Rate from an average of 29 NDs per 1,000 live births in 2006/7 to an average of 23 NDs per 1,000 live births in 2008/9, despite increased deliveries.
- Increasing signs of women’s empowerment with Women’s Groups taking up challenges beyond Maternal and Neonatal Health, which impact on livelihood & general wellbeing of women, their families and communities
