Lee GM, Hartmann CW, Grahan D, et al. Perceived impact of the Medicare policy to adjust payment for health-care associated infections. American Journal of Infection Control. 2012 May;40(4):314-319.
The authors of this study find that the Medicare policy to cease payment for hospitalizations resulting in complications deemed preventable, including several healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), appears to drive hospital infection prevention efforts. It remains unclear, however, whether greater engagement in HAI prevention practices has led to better patient outcomes.
