Sampling plays a major role in quality improvement work. In most cases, some type of “judgment sample” is used to collect data from a system; where the goal is to learn about or improve a specific process or system, judgment samples are the most convenient, economical, and technically and conceptually the most appropriate approach. But judgment sampling is often not understood or considered to be a reliable method. The authors define judgment sampling, discuss its applications, and provide a clinical example.
