HealthPartners, an integrated health system, brought together key stakeholders from across their system to develop an optimized spine model to lower the cost of care. Representatives from primary care, speciality care, ancillary care, a health plan, and the community worked together to develop a pilot and system-wide roll-out of the spine model. The model, which includes both surgical and non-surgical options, resulted in a total cost savings of $1.2 million from 2010 to 2011.
This posterboard, presented at IHI's 25th Annual IHI National Forum (December 2013), displays the model and the results achieved by HealthPartners, including a 5 percent decrease in narcotic prescriptions after the first visit, a 4 percent decrease in imaging, and a 2 percent decrease in surgical referrals.
