Overview

Every year, the National Forum refuels the tanks of leaders of change, from executives to the front line. This conference is the premier "meeting place" for people committed to the mission of providing safe, effective patient care at a reasonable cost. This annual event draws nearly 6,000 health care leaders from around the world to Orlando and thousands more via satellite broadcast.

Can't make it to Orlando? Consider one of our virtual options:

  • Satellite broadcast: This is a great opportunity to share the four keynote and five special interest keynotes live with your entire organization in an auditorium or conference room.

  • IHI TV: This option is intended for individual viewing on a desktop monitor. Individuals have the opportunity to purchase all of the General Conference workshop sessions audio synched with slides, or select a la carte sessions. IHI TV will be available for viewing starting on Monday, January 2.

2011 National Forum Chair - Derek Feeley.jpgDerek Feeley is Director General for Health and Social care in the Scottish Government and Chief Executive of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland. He is a career civil servant with a varied background in policy analysis. From 2002 to 2004, he spent two years as Principal Private Secretary to Scotland's First Minister. Thereafter, Derek moved on to work on developing a framework for service redesign in the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland. He was a 2005-2006 Harkness/Health Foundation Fellow in Health Care Policy and spent a year in the United States working with Kaiser Permanente and the Veteran’s Health Administration. Derek was appointed as Director of Health Care Policy and Strategy on his return. In that role he was responsible for advising the Scottish Government on all health care quality issues, including patient safety, health care information technology, child and maternal health, and on health care strategic planning.

2011 National Forum Chair - Dale Ann Micalizzi.jpgDale Ann Micalizzi is an Advocate for pediatric patient safety and transparency in medicine. She has experience in pediatric health care, preschool education, and child welfare.  Her eleven-year old son, Justin, died following a “simple” incision and drainage of an infected ankle in 2001. She has worked tirelessly in search of answers about her son’s death, giving rise to a quest to improve pediatric patient safety and transparency in health care. Her efforts focus on compassion and support for grieving families, full disclosure of adverse events, and education and reform that will restore ethics and safety to medicine. She has presented as a faculty member for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement since 2005 and has acted as a consultant, speaker, and improvement advisor for numerous health care organizations, medical schools, and patient/family support programs. She is the founder of Justin’s HOPE at The Task Force For Global Health (Child Survival and Development).

2011 National Forum Chair - Kavita Patel.jpgKavita Patel, MD, MS, is Director of the Health Policy Program at the New America Foundation. She is also a board-certified internal medicine physician who has dedicated her life to bringing the stories and lessons learned from her clinical experiences to policymakers and the people working on shaping the future of our health care system. Her expertise spans a number of sectors, including delivery system reform and equipping clinical teams with the skills necessary to respond to our changing health care system. Previously, Kavita was Director of Policy for the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, where she worked on health care reform legislation. Prior to that position, she was the Deputy Staff Director for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee under the leadership of Senator Edward M. Kennedy. She also served as a Clinical Instructor at UCLA and an Associate Scientist at the RAND Corporation focusing on research in health care quality.
 
NEWStephenSwensen.jpgStephen Swensen, MD, MMM, FACR, is the Director for Quality at the Mayo Clinic. He is also a Professor of Radiology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Swensen leads the Value Creation Program as Associate Dean for Value, serves as a member of the Mayo Clinic Management Team and the Clinical Practice Committee, and is on the Luther Midelfort Medical Center-Mayo Health System Board of Directors. Previously, he was Chair of the Department of Radiology and Education Program Director. He is past President of the Society of Thoracic Radiology and the Fleischner Society and has been Principal Investigator on three National Institute of Health grants.

IHI TV

The 23rd Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care will feature video segments highlighting the accomplishments of several of IHI’s partner organizations. These broadcast-quality videos will be produced through IHI’s video partner, Ellis Strategies.

Videos will be featured on video screens and on hotel TV channels during the National Forum in Orlando and afterwards on IHI TV.
  • Your organization will maintain editorial control over the stories
  • You will own the final video and raw footage for future usage
  • Videos will be produced in High-Definition
