I am looking for any literature that supports the elimination of heparin in A-lines.

There basically isn't any such literature.

I think the question should be asked in reverse: what evidence is there that heparin SHOULD be used in these situations? Since there is no such literature, an evidence-based-medicine approach would dictate that it not be used. That's the approach we took some years ago: we haven't used heparin for a long time and have detected no changes in outcomes since doing so.

Does anyone have evidence that the use of Heparin flushes for any central line is safe? (PICC, triple lumens etc).

I agree that eliminating the use of Heparin in Arterial lines and peripheral lines is good and safe practice

You need to have a Critical Care nurse review this page... you are lumping Arterial line pressure bags and Pressure bags to Swans/Central Venous Catheters together and stating incorrect, even dangerous information. I have never heard of putting medications into an Arterial line (except Heparin in the bag); you would never inject a med into an artery, unless some bizarre extreme case that I cannot even imagine. Unless there is some new practice I have never heard of. Please check your facts. In other words you would have a major ADE on your hands if someone flushed medication thru an Arterial line as you are suggesting !!!This page needs to be completely rewritten before you are sued or one of those 5 million lives is lost. Thanks !!!

You may want to obtain this article which reviews the issues and contains additional references:
