We are looking to develop a rapid response team, although our facility does not have an intensivist. Any tips on where to start? Is a physician or NP needed to run a rapid response team?
Thanks,

Julie, I would love to help you with the planning and implementation of a RRT. And no, you do not need to have an intensivist to start a program. By setting criteria and educating staff to call for the RRT, the RRT can be the 'second set of eyes' and help the staff assess and formulate a plan to call the attending. Have you found the 'getting started kit' for rrt yet? Here is the link.http://www.ihi.org/NR/rdonlyres/9134B60C-BB05-4735-8DF4-D96D09CC9EAB/0/RRTHowtoGuideFINAL4_06.pdf

Feel free to contact me by email and we can set up a time to talk if you would like. My email address is: kdduncan@midsouth.rr.com

How does the Housesupervisor role fit into the Rapid Response Team? We use Housesupervisors at night and on weekends.

We have an established RRT Team on our Med/Surg Units. We are in the early stages of exploring how an RRT team could work in Mental Health. Has anyone already established this practice? If so we would like to hear about your process.

I'm glad you posted this, as we are in the early stages of developing a team in our free-standing psych hosptial. Would love to hear your update, and any others who have established a team on a mental health unit.

I am looking for information/policy from a hospital who has implemented a Rapid Response team where the patient and/or family members can activate.
Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy -- For patient-/family-activated Rapid Response Teams, you might want to check out the "Condition H" tool developed by UPMC Shadyside on IHI's website for more information:

RRT have proven to be very beneficial to hospitals of your size. Most note a significant decrease in codes within the first few months of implemenation. ALso you mention the well intended responders to codes, an RRT and a delination of the code/RRT events can assist in role definitions and responsibilites of responders. Let me know if I can help you.
