Is there a tool anyone is using to evaluate the medical necessity of a central line other than simply asking the question?
For example: reason for CVC, no options for peripheral access
Thank you

Hi Susan,
Did you locate a tool for review of central lines?
I am looking for the same.
Thanks,
Jacqui

Dear Susan and Jacqui,
I am the Director of the Improving Outcomes for High-Risk and Critically Ill Patients Learning and Innovation Community at IHI. I checked with my teams about your question and Virginia Mason shared a screenshot with me of their Cerner electronic system as it relates to this subject. There is a yes/no box for whether the patient has a central line and then another yes/no about whether it is necessary. Next to the "necessary" part there is a list of "Central Line/PICC Indications/Needs" and they are as follows:
Medications/IV Solutions infused safely only through central line
Hemodynamic monitoring
No peripheral access possible
Need multiple IV ports (no peripheral access possible)
I hope that helps. I will let you know if I hear from other teams.
Good luck!
