The fishbone diagram can be a very useful tool when trying to look in different places for causes. However, I do not think it is correct to call it a cause and effect diagram. A true C&E chart shows logically how the causes work together to produce effects, and does not focus on categories. The fishbone is a great start to an analysis, but it does not represent all causes of the problem or show how they interact with one another. If I was a manager who was not involved in the analysis, I couldn't look at a fishbone diagram and truly understand how the problem occurred.
