Our hospital does not use a physician on the team. Only a critical care nurse and an respiratory therapist make up the team. Protocols are in place, approved by the medical board, to empower the nurse to administer a set of treatments' per protocol' based on assessment. Careful protocol development can be the key to implementing an empowered team Good luck with your project.

Our team does not use a physician either. What protocols do you have for the team to empower them?

My hospital is pushing toward having pts and their families activate RRT. I personally don't think this is a great idea. I think they should first inform the problem to the primary rn then the charge rn. What do you think?

We first call the primary MD. If not able to get any reponse w/in 10 minutes or pt condition deteriorate quickly then we can call our medical director who is part of the team.

Pick either a pulmonologist or a cardiologist or even an ER doctor. Good luck

We too follow approved protocols established by our Stroke Committee Team members and approved ultimately by our Medical Staff. Our team consists of ICU RNs and Respiratory Therapists. We have set protocols which cover "standing orders" such as ABGs, CT-Non-contrast, application of Oxygen therapy and other orders. The Rapid Response Team members carry a specific spectra-link phone (in house phone) with a Dedicated phone extension, used exclusively for RRT calls only. We also allow family members and Non-clinical staff to call the RRT team members when necessary. We've had good results with the initiation of this team. The use of the RRT has decreased our un-necessary admits to the ICU and allowed us to prevent further deterioriation of the patient; ultimately providing improved patient safety.
good luck with your efforts.
