In case of defining the catheter assocaited BSI, dont you require to culture the tip of the line using semiquantitative method ie >15 colonies, & see if it matches the growth in blood culture, or clinical signs of infection around the catheter, because we try to rule out the secondary sepsis ie urosepsis, or sepsis related to wounds. We see cases where the same bacteris in blood , wound & urine at the same time when the pt had a central line.............thank you

CDC definiton of Blood stream infection due to catheter requires blood from the central line, blood from the peripheral line and cath tip with organisms and sensitivity patterns reviewed with > 15 cfu's. Cultures should be done simutaneously prior to antibiotic therapy.
