What are you using in your facility as standard DVT prophylaxis orders?
Under what conditions are SCD's (leg pumps) acceptable over pharmacetical measures? What degree of ambulation/activity is enough to not use DVT prophylaxis?

Ventilator Bundles

I am the Respiratory Therapy Manager at a interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Hospital, and have been developing these procedures to make them more specific to our needs. I would like to express my concerns about the tips regarding the vent bundles. One of the recommendations was to encourage the RT staff to become involved in the care by notifying nursing the the HOB was elevated correctly. Another was for the RT staff to then raise the HOB with assistance.
Working in true interdisciplary fashion, which studies have shown to tremendously increase patient outcomes, an RT is involved in far more than just notifying someone or requiring assistance in elevating the HOB. The RT works directly with the LIP in developing the plan of the care for each patient, and is then responsible for implementing that plan along with the rest of the team.
I would encourage any clinical person to realize that there are specialties in all areas of health care. Recognizing and respecting those specialties for the expertise that they have can only improve the patients quality of life.
Again, let us all remember that our goals should all be the same. Patient outcomes are at the forefront of our mission. We are all a team, and not one of us is more important than the other. We each have something to give that is of benefit. Encourage one another to act, develop strong lines of communication, and respect our co-workers.

Dear Tina,

Thank you for alerting us to the fact this old wording was still on our web page. We changed it in other places, but missed it here.

I am a Respiratory Therapist myself and am now co-lead faculty for the VAP work in the 5 Million Lives Camapaign. Last year I had the opportunity to update our materials and also had concerns about this wording and changed it to more accurately reflect the equal role respiratory therapists have in this important work.

While I don't know the source of the tip, I don't think anyone every intended it to be an insult to any profession.

My next step is to send the updated wording to our webteam for posting. Thanks for pointing it out so we can be sure it's on this page too.

Sincerely,
Fran Griffin, RRT (and proud of it!)
