Re: Central Line Insertion Checklist

We are trying to make sure we are following central line bundle completely and wanted to check with others about interpretation of full barrier precautions. The way we have interpreted this is that the provider placing the line should wear full sterile gown, gloves, mask, hat, etc. and if another person is closely assisting, e.g. an attending MD showing a med student how to insert a line, both should wear full barriers. However, should all persons around the bedside assisting by handing off materials or comforting patient wear full sterile barriers? (Of course they should wear a mask but what about sterile gown, cap, and sterile gloves?) Thank you!

Shelby, Please see a discusson about this issue on the Campaign web discussion regarding Central Line Infection. To get there, click on Community on the left side of the screen, Web Discussions, and then Campaign.
In short, our faculty expert responded to a very similar question as follows: "...gowning and gloving for all persons in contact with the field (especially if 'dropping' anything on the field) makes very good sense. It's the care that I would want personally. Reluctance on this matter sounds the same whether coming from physicians or nurses -- it's not a big problem to gown and glove and mask and wear a hat, but rather a small inconvenience. We'd all want it done for us personally."
Best, Joelle

Hi, I can give you a very knowledgeable reference for just about any vascular access question. Call Kay Coulter at "Infusion Knowledge". I dont have her 800 # but she is on the web. She has documentation for just about anything you could possibly ask about infusion therapy.
