CPPS Review Courses

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) offers review courses to experienced patient safety professionals who plan to take the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) examination. This course can help participants prepare for the exam by reviewing domain content areas and test-taking strategies.

These courses are not required to pass the certification exam. Participation in any of these courses does not guarantee a passing score on the certification exam.​​​​

​​Erin Baker headshot photoErin ​Graydon Baker, MS, RRT, CPPS, CPHRM, is the Clinical Risk Manager for the MaineHealth system. She is a registered respiratory therapist with 20 years of clinical experience. After moving to Maine, she spent a year as the lead for Quality and Patient Safety at York Hospital and recently accepted the position as Director for Risk Management and Patient Safety at Maine Medical Center. She recently joined MaineHealth as the Clinical Risk Manager to help drive safety and mitigate risk throughout the MaineHealth system. She has her Respiratory Therapy degree from Northeastern University and her graduate degree in Training and Human Resource Development from Lesley University. Erin participated with 15 other Patient Safety Professionals from across the country in writing the content for the Certification for Professionals in Patient Safety offered by IHI. Erin completed the Advisory Board Fellowship in 2019. She also hold a Lean/6 Sigma Green Belt.

John B. Hertig, PharmD, MS, CPPS is Vice-Chair and an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from Purdue University. He completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice and PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration residency at The Ohio State University Medical Center while also obtaining a Masters degree in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University. Dr. Hertig has lectured and published on a variety of leadership, administration, patient safety, and health policy topics, and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. He holds various national and international appointments, including advisory roles with the US Food and Drug Administration and the International Pharmaceutical Federation, where he is also Vice President of the Americas for the Hospital Pharmacy Section. Dr. Hertig is a member of the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies – Global (ASOP), where he leads efforts to reduce the patient safety impact of illegal and counterfeit online drug distribution worldwide. He was awarded the ASOP Global Patient Safety Champion Award in 2018. ​Dr. Hertig received the Glen J. Sperandio award, honoring the Indiana Health-System Pharmacist of the year, the “Excellence in Innovation” Award, and the Medication Safety Pharmacist of the Year award in the State of Indiana.

Refund requests submitted less than 72 hours (3 business days) in advance of the scheduled start time will be ineligible for a refund.​

The CPPS credential distinguishes health care professionals who meet the competency requir​ements in the areas of patient safety science and human factors engineering, and who demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge to effectively plan and implement patient safety initiatives.
