CPPS Examination

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The CPPS examination is a computer-based test offered throughout the year at AMP Assessment Centers located domestically in the United States and internationally. The examination is also available online via live remote proctor. The examination is administered by appointment only. Available dates will be indicated when you schedule your examination. Candidates are scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis. Candidates will be given two hours to complete the examination.

CPPS Examination: Live Remote Proctoring Now Available​
 
Live remote online proctoring for the CPPS exam is now available. This new exam delivery option allows CPPS candidates to continue advancing their personal and professional goals while being mindful of health concerns and access to physical testing sites.
 
Candidates can now select either ‘Test Center’ or ‘Remote Online Proctored’ delivery mode for their examination. For more information on how to book your examination, please see the 'How to Book an Examination' below.

​NEW! The IHI CPPS™ Scholarship Program for Nurses: Advancing Equity in Safety Certification​

Through the generous support of Medtronic, in recognition of the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, sixty scholarships for Black nurses, Indigenous nurses, and nurses of color are now available for the CPPS credentialing program. Each scholarship will include access to the online CPPS review course, the CPPS practice exam, and the CPPS credentialing exam.

Deadline for application submission is October 30 at 11:59 PM ET. All scholarship decisions will be communicated by December 15. Scholarship recipients will have through June 15, 2021 to sit for the CPPS certification exam.​​

How to book an examination

COVID-19 and Impact on CPPS Examination
 
Following a period of closures, CPPS testing partner PSI has begun to open sites while adhering to the safety practices recommended by public health officials. Sites will be operating at 50% seat capacity to follow social distancing requirements.​
 
If you have an upcoming scheduled examination, please verify the PSI site closure list​​. If your site is not on this list, it is open.
 
Please note that CPPS exam candidates who are impacted by a temporary test site closure will be contacted by PSI to reschedule their CPPS exam at no charge.
 
  • Go to the PSI certification website
  • Under 'Test Takers' on the main page click 'Begin Scheduling'​
  • Choose the category, program, and examination:
    • Healthcare
    • Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety
    • Certified Professional in Patient Safety Examination
  • Click the “Register for this Exam” button at the bottom of the page.
  • Complete the requested fields and click ‘Submit”
  • Review exam details and click ‘Schedule’
  • Select ‘Test Center’ or ‘Remote Proctoring’ from the pop-up that appears

  • Take a practice examination​​ to help you evaluate your level of preparedness for the certification examination. Practice examinations are available for $85 and may be ordered online. IHI Premium and Premium+ Members qualify for a discounted rate​. More details can be found in the section 'Associated Costs' below.​

International Candidates

Candidates testing outside of the US may submit their applications online or by mail. International candidates will be notified of the exam scheduling process as follows:

  • Online applicants will be notified by email as soon as they complete the application.
  • A candidate who submits a paper application form will be notified by email within 10 business days of receipt of his or her application form.

Associated Costs

The cost of the CPPS examination is US $449.
