Kate B. Hilton, JD, MTS, has taught and coached health professionals around the globe to build individual and organizational capability to address the adaptive, human-side of change for more than a decade. Kate is Faculty at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. She advises IHI's Open School, internal teams, and large-scale improvement efforts in the use of leadership, organizing and change management methods to advance and sustain improvement. She is lead faculty in IHI's Leadership and Organizing for Change online course with coaching, and she has authored white papers and peer-reviewed articles on the subject, including IHI's Psychology of Change Framework. Kate is also a Founding Director of ReThink Health, Faculty in the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity program at the George Washington University, and contributing faculty to the Rockefeller Leadership Fellows and Management and Leadership Development Program at Dartmouth College.
Alex Anderson is a Research Associate with IHI's Innovation Team, a founder of IHI's Diversity and Inclusion Council, and a lead of IHI's internal equity team. His innovation work focuses on identifying solutions to problems involving disparate segments of complex systems. Some of his research includes: working with employers as purchasers of health care to achieve better health and care for employee populations; developing a whole system approach to improving patient flow through the hospital system; advancing care for older adults through community- and home-based care as well as the oral health system; and, an approach to address the human side of change with IHI's framework on the psychology of change. Alex also works to improve IHI's operations, processes, and culture to increase equity for all staff by developing a workforce representative of the communities where IHI works as well as addressing the ways that racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression affect the experience of IHI staff. He received a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where his studies concentrated on Business and Public Policy as well as Operations Information Management Systems.
Derek Feeley, DBA, joined IHI as Executive Vice President in September 2013 and became CEO in January 2016. His work is international in scope, guiding work to deliver IHI's mission to improve health and care across the world. Prior to taking up his current role, Mr. Feeley had been Director General (DG) Health and Chief Executive of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland since November 2010. From January 2011, the DG role was extended to cover Health and Social Care. He was the principal adviser to Scottish Ministers on health and care issues and he provided direction to the work of NHS Boards in ensuring the delivery of high-quality health and health care. Mr. Feeley has had a varied background in policy analysis during thirty years in public service. From 2002 to 2004, he spent two years as Principal Private Secretary to Scotland's First Minister. Thereafter, he moved on to work on developing a framework for service redesign in the NHS. He was a 2005-2006 Harkness/Health Foundation Fellow in Health Care Policy and spent a year in the United States working with Kaiser Permanente and the Veteran's Health Administration. Mr. Feeley was appointed as Director of Healthcare Policy and Strategy on his return. In that role he was responsible for advising the Scottish Government on all health care quality issues, including patient safety, and he also led on health care information technology.
