About this IHI Virtual Expedition

​​​​​If you’re struggling with how to implement and sustain improvements across your hospital, health system, or community, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has developed an approach that includes a cohesive and balanced set of steps for achieving — and sustaining — system-wide change.

Get a team together for this Virtual Expedition and learn how to use these steps as a guide to achieve your scale-up goals.

Key topics throughout this six-week virtual program include:

  • Setting up for improvement at full scale
    • Engage leaders, assess and create the will and motivation for change, analyze existing strategies and approaches related to the improvements, collect baseline data, and define the roles and contributions of stakeholders.
  • Building a scalable pilot
    • Create a “scalable unit” by intensively testing ideas on a small scale to determine promising practices for wider implementation, test communication messages and methods for attracting and supporting potential adopters, and plan for infrastructure changes to support sustainable changes at full scale.
  • Testing for scale up
    • Test the applicability of implementing improvements in the broader range of settings likely to be encountered in moving to full scale, inviting refinement and adaptation.
  • Moving to full scale and sustainability
    • With a well-tested set of improvements, supported by a reliable data feedback system, plan for and carry out the rapid deployment of these improvements at full scale.

Faculty will share several examples, including:

  • Improved health outcomes for infants and children at a population level
  • Creation of age-friendly health systems
  • Reduced national cesarean section rates
  • Enhanced safety for older adults in community-based settings
  • Improved health, well-being, and equity for communities

We encourage participants to have a specific improvement that they intend to take to full scale in their organizations in mind for this program.

​What you’ll Learn

By the end of this Virtual Expedition, each participant will be able to:

  • Develop a comprehensive plan for taking an improvement, or set of improvements to scale
  • Identify and build “scalable units” that serve as the foundation for large-scale implementation
  • Apply communication strategies that effectively attract and engage potential adopters of the improvements
  • Build data collection strategies to help guide large-scale change efforts
  • Select methods for rapidly deploying improvements
  • Manage the change process effectively, with the help of executive leaders and day-to-day change leaders
  • Develop monitoring and feedback systems that help to sustain results at scale

This IHI Virtual Expedition is approved for a total of 9 continuing education credits for physicians and pharmacists.

Faculty

Marie Schall Marie W. Schall, Senior Director, IHI, leads innovation and improvement projects, including the STate Action on Avoidable Rehospitalizations (STAAR) initiative. She also serves as senior faculty for IHI's Breakthrough Series College and is a frequent speaker on IHI's spread methodology. Prior to joining IHI in 1995, Ms. Schall designed and led improvement projects for PRONJ (the New Jersey quality improvement organization) and was Director of Research for the Health Research and Educational Trust of New Jersey, a nonprofit affiliate of the New Jersey Hospital Association.

lois van abel.jpgLois Van Abel MBA, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, Bellin Health completed her undergraduate nursing studies at UW Oshkosh and obtained her Master’s degree in Business with emphasis in Healthcare Administration through Concordia University. She is a board certified in Nurse Executive-Advanced through ANCC. Ms. Van Abel's current role is at Bellin Health is Director of Care Coordination.

​​tina lynge - Cropped Copy.jpgTina Lynge is the Chief Consultant, Director, and Improvement Expert at the Danish Society for Patient Safety, as well as a faculty member at the IHI. Tina has many years of experience with quality and patient safety work in health care at different levels, both as Head manager and Director. She has developed an in-depth and broad knowledge of the improvement method, improvement work and implementation and scale up in practice from her work as Faculty of Patient-Safe Hospital, and as Director for a large community program. Her work has allowed her to cultivate extensive knowledge and experience in organization training and learning seminars, as well as collaborative courses for health professionals.
