DerekFeeley.jpgDerek Feeley, DBA, President and CEO, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), drives IHI's strategy across five core focus areas: Improvement Capability; Person- and Family-Centered Care; Patient Safety; Quality, Cost, and Value; and Triple Aim for Populations. His role is international in scope, guiding work to deliver on IHI's mission to improve health and health care around the world. Prior to joining IHI in 2013, Mr. Feeley was Director General for Health and Social Care and Chief Executive of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland. In this role he was the principal adviser to Scottish Ministers on health and care issues and he provided direction to the work of NHS Boards in ensuring the delivery of high-quality health care. Mr. Feeley has a varied background in policy analysis gained during his thirty years in public service. From 2002 to 2004, he served as Principal Private Secretary to Scotland's First Minister, which then led to a new role developing a framework for service redesign in the NHS. A 2005-2006 Harkness/ Health Foundation Fellow in Health Care Policy, he spent one year in the United States working with Kaiser Permanente and the Veteran's Health Administration. Upon returning to the NHS, Mr. Feeley was appointed Director of Healthcare Policy and Strategy, with responsibility for advising the Scottish Government on all health care quality and patient safety issues, and he led work focused on health care information technology.
 
PierreBarker_new.jpgPierre M. Barker, MD, Chief Global Partnerships and Programs Officer, IHI, is responsible for IHI's large-scale health systems improvement initiatives outside the US. Dr. Barker attended medical school in South Africa and trained in pediatrics in the UK and US. Before joining IHI, he was Medical Director of University of North Carolina (UNC) Children's Hospital clinics and was responsible for leading health-system-wide initiatives on improving access to care and chronic disease management. Dr. Barker initially served at IHI as in-country Director of IHI's South Africa Projects and then as head of IHI programs in low- and middle-income countries. He retains a position of Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the Maternal and Child Health Department at Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill. He also advises the World Health Organization on health systems strengthening, redesign of HIV care, and infant feeding guidelines.
 
pedrodelgado.jpgPedro Delgado, MSc, Head of Europe and Latin America, IHI, has a unique ability to work across cultures, languages, and systems. Based in the UK, he has been a driving force in IHI’s global strategy. From reducing C-sections in Brazil to improving early years education in Chile, patient safety in Portugal, and mental health in London, Mr. Delgado has forged key relationships and led the design and implementation of large-scale health system improvement efforts and networks. He coaches senior leaders and teams and lectures extensively worldwide on large-scale change, patient safety, and quality improvement. At IHI, he facilitated the Quality and Innovation Centers network, which included Kaiser Permanente’s Performance Improvement Institute, Qulturum in Jönköping County (Sweden), and the James Anderson Center for Clinical Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Mr. Delgado's diverse background includes a brief stint as a professional football (soccer) player, roles in hospital management and large-scale improvement leadership in the UK, and experience working in mental health in Venezuela and the UK.
 
Gandhi_Tejal_thumb.jpgTejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, Chief Clinical and Safety Officer, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), leads IHI programs focusing on improving patient and workforce safety. Dr. Gandhi was President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) from 2013 until 2017, when the Foundation merged with IHI. She continues to serve as President of the Lucian Leape Institute, a think tank founded by NPSF that now operates under the IHI patient safety focus area. She also holds an appointment as Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gandhi is a prominent advocate for patient safety at the regional, national, and international levels, driving educational and professional certification efforts, and helping to create and spread innovative new safety ideas. 

CarolHaraden.jpgCarol R. Haraden, PhD, Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, is a member of the IHI team responsible for developing innovative designs in patient care. She leads IHI's work with Health Improvement Scotland to transform the safety of every Scottish hospital over a five-year period. She also leads work in Denmark, the South of England, and the US to improve the safety of health care systems in these countries. Dr. Haraden is the Executive Lead for the IHI Patient Safety Executive Development Program. She has been a dean in higher education, as well as a clinician, consultant, and researcher, and she served on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Engineering Approaches to Improve Health Care. Dr. Haraden is a judge for several national quality awards and an associate editor for the journal BMJ Quality and Safety.
 
brent_james_new.jpgBrent C. James, MD, MStat, Chief Quality Officer, Intermountain Healthcare, is also Executive Director of the Institute for Health Care Delivery Research at Intermountain. His work in clinical quality improvement, patient safety, and the infrastructure that underlies successful improvement efforts is known internationally. Through the Intermountain Advanced Training Program in Clinical Practice Improvement, he has trained more than 5,000 senior physician, nursing, and administrative executives in clinical management methods; the success of these methods is reflected in the fact that more than 50 "sister" training programs now run in 10 countries. Dr. James holds faculty appointments at the University of Utah School of Medicine, the Harvard School of Public Health, and the University of Sydney School of Public Health. Previously, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health, provided statistical support for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, and staffed the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. He participated in many of the Institute of Medicine's seminal works on quality and patient safety and serves on several nonprofit boards of trustees dedicated to clinical improvement.
 
Lloyd_Robert_Thumb.jpg Robert Lloyd, PhD, Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), provides leadership in the areas of performance improvement strategies, building capacity and capability for improvement, statistical process control methods, and development of strategic dashboards. He also serves as faculty for various IHI initiatives and demonstration projects in the US and abroad. Before joining IHI, Dr. Lloyd served as the Corporate Director of Quality Resource Services for Advocate Health Care (Oakbrook, IL), Director of Quality Measurement for Lutheran General Health System, Senior Director at the Hospital Research and Educational Trust of AHA, and spent ten years with the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania in various leadership roles. He is author of numerous articles, reports, and books.

AfieshaBalgobin.jpgAfiesha McMahon, MHA, is a Senior Project Manager at the IHI. She currently manages IHI’s Triple Aim for Populations Focus Area, which encompasses content, operations, and programming in the areas of the Triple Aim, population health, population management, primary care, and community-wide improvement efforts. Her current portfolio focuses on community-based improvement initiatives in poverty reduction and early childhood education. Her experience includes project design and management, organizational development, and collaboration. She is a graduate of Suffolk University, Sawyer Business School with a master’s degree in Health Administration.
 
mariannemcpherson.jpg Marianne McPherson, PhD, MA, MS, is Director of the 100 Million Healthier Lives implementation at IHI. Her responsibilities include developing and implementing new programs, building external partnerships, and supporting a culture of unprecedented collaboration, innovative improvement, and system transformation to support 100 million people worldwide living healthier lives by 2020. Dr. McPherson is passionate about applying diverse methods and frameworks to address complex social problems related to improving population health and promoting equity. She received her master's in public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, her master's in women’s and gender studies from Brandeis University, and her PhD in social policy from the Heller School at Brandeis University.
 
jessperlo.jpgJessica Perlo, MPH, is the Network Director of IHI’s Open School, an interprofessional educational program that provides health students with the skills to become change agents in health care. She is charged with leading IHI’s effort to mobilize 30,000 students to take action to improve the health of populations and achieve the Triple Aim. Ms. Perlo has worked for more than 10 years in health professional program development and quality improvement at both IHI and Harvard’s academic medical centers. She holds a master's in public health from Boston University School of Public Health and also received training in community organizing at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and in facilitative leadership at the Interaction Institute for Social Change.
 

CarlyStrang.jpgCarly Strang, Executive Director, IHI, provides strategic planning and programmatic leadership for the IHI Open School, an initiative to build improvement capability and leadership in the next generation of health care professionals. She is responsible for executing on and leading a team to deliver innovative, world-class education; expanding a global network of students and professionals; and ensuring operational and financial sustainability. Previously, Ms. Strang worked in IHI’s New Business team, designing and delivering professional development programs and managing operations for a grant-funded initiative to integrate quality and safety into medical and nursing school curricula. She has organizational development experience designing an internal leadership program for middle managers, managing IHI’s internship development program, and leading cross-functional teams in internal improvement efforts. Ms. Strang is currently pursuing an MBA degree with a focus on Health Administration.
