Attuned to the health needs of populations and patients in different parts of the world, IHI focuses on matching priority regional health needs with our unique capabilities and areas of focus. We work globally because countries are interdependent in terms of health and health care, innovations can arise anywhere, and everyone has something to teach and something to learn. IHI strives to meet our partners where they are today and work side-by-side with them to chart the path to future success. In this session you will hear about past and current improvement projects that are taking place around the world.

Patient Safety

IHI focuses on innovations that create a system of safety across entire organizations. We work with partners to understand safety at a system level, to segment their populations, to identify and predict risk, and to act accordingly. We are also innovating in areas of patient safety that have seen the least attention such as diagnostic error, primary care, and behavioral and mental health.

The next five years will bring a new era of person-centered care that will extend significantly beyond the simple involvement of patients and families to new models of care that shift the conversation from "What's the matter?" to "What matters to you?" This session will cover the ways IHI is working with systems and through public engagement to both to improve the care experience (building stronger coordination, communication, and compassion) and to build the skills necessary to partner with patients and family members in meaningful and transformative ways.

Out-of-Industry Site Visit: Legal Sea Foods' Quality Control Center

Go on a behind-the-scenes tour to learn how Legal Sea Foods consistently provides the freshest fish in Boston. We will visit the Quality Control Center, where we will walk through all aspects of the production line, and see how quality is kept at the forefront of their priorities. We will also learn their best practices related to safety.

  • Identify ways of managing large-scale operations and flow in a non-health care industry that can be compared with, and applied to, your own work environment
  • Recognize and analyze key concepts of operations, flow, safety, and quality control/improvement in a different industry
