Develop Improvement Knowledge and Skills to Coach and Facilitate Improvement Teams

This interactive, experiential program is designed to advance your improvement capability and deepen your skills in coaching and facilitating improvement teams to achieve their goals. With a unique focus on how to do improvement work with or via others, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI's) Improvement Coach Professional Development Program specifically explores the human side of change and the experiences many face when doing improvement work in the workplace. Practice during the virtual workshops and applying your learning with your team back home creates a dynamic learning opportunity.

What You Will Learn

In order to make the most of this practical professional development program, you must identify a team with an improvement project. This team must be willing to allow you to apply your learning from the program and act as a coach.

This program is designed to help you:

Describe the science of improvement and use the Model for Improvement as a roadmap for improvement projects
Employ skills to coach improvement teams on how to develop, test, and implement changes including identifying high-leverage change ideas and testing them using PDSA cycles
Explain how to use data for improvement, including how to use and interpret run charts and other key quality improvement tools
Develop skills in team facilitation, communication, decision-making, and understanding team culture
Apply just-in-time teaching of improvement skills to team members in order to advance the team’s work
Plan how you will continue coaching your team and prepare yourself to coach subsequent teams
Identify concepts of implementation, sustainability, spread, and scale-up

Who Should Attend

This program is ideal for people who support improvement teams on a weekly basis (e.g., 25-50% of their time as an improvement coach).

In order to stay at pace with the program, participants are also encouraged to have a foundation in quality improvement (QI) concepts, methods, and tools (see recommendations in the 'Recommended Prerequisites' section below).

QI team members or leaders who are interested in deepening their knowledge in QI and coaching others would be a great fit. Consider registering for this program if you are looking to:

Coach staff on how to apply improvement concepts, methods, and tools to daily work
Support teams in identifying a problem and scoping an improvement project

Faculty

Lauren Hayden (she/her), an Improvement Advisor (IA) at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), is part of IHI’s Innovation, Design, and Learning Team. She teaches improvement science and methods around the world, most notably as the Director and faculty for IHI’s Improvement Coach Professional Development Program. In the US, she works as an IA on initiatives to advance equity in health care, including with the Kansas City Health Collaborative, Equity in Orange County, and Pursuing Equity. She also leads IHI’s internal improvement science training and development.

Brenda Carson, Senior Professional Officer at the Northern Ireland Practice & Education Council for Nurses and Midwives began her nursing career in 1986 at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. She worked in several nursing positions across Southeastern Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland before taking up post as Patient Safety Officer in 2005. Brenda has trained with IHI as a Patient Safety Officer, an Improvement Coach, and an Improvement Advisor and progressed to the role of Senior Lead Nurse for Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, leading several improvement initiatives across the organization and managing a Quality Improvement Academy within the organization to build Improvement Science capacity and capability at all levels of Health and Social Care. At the end of 2023 Brenda took up a new role as a Senior Professional Officer within the Northern Ireland Practice & Education Council for Nurses and Midwives. Brenda was twice awarded the Northern Ireland RCN Chief Nursing Officers award for Patient Safety in 2007 and 2014. In her free time, Brenda loves to spend time with her 2 grandchildren and walking her dog, Molly.

Michael A. Posencheg, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Attending Neonatologist, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, is particularly interested in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. He completed the Improvement Advisor (IA) and Graduate IA program at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. While the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Nursery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, his team made significant improvements in reducing unplanned extubating in ventilated infants, redesigning delivery room care and improving admission temperatures for infants with a birth weight <1250g, reducing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonization, and standardizing the management of apnea of prematurity. As the Associate CMO for Penn Medicine, Dr. Posencheg led a team to organize and execute system-wide projects together with entity-based clinical teams to improve clinical outcomes and reduce costs. The projects have focused on reducing aspiration pneumonia and Clostridium Difficile infections, decreasing ventilator days and days of delirium in ICU patients, as well as initiatives for enhanced recovery after surgery. Dr. Posencheg is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. 

Recommended Prerequisites

Experience: Previous experience participating on or leading an improvement team
Knowledge: prior improvement knowledge required:
- IHI Open School QI courses

An equivalent level of learning from other organizations (e.g., ASQ, NQF, or a university-based QI program)

Examples of Appropriate Projects Include:

Improve a process that produces good results but occasionally results in errors or problems (e.g. testing new protocols for reducing errors).
Identify a process that better matches and meets a patient or family need, even if patients or families have not expressly asked for it (e.g. test a process to assess long-term care residents' needs better).
Identify and improve processes, products, and services by making fundamental changes even though the output is currently not considered a problem, to deliver even better outcomes in the future.
Improve a product, process, or service today, which will put you in a better competitive position (e.g. improve outcomes for patients with chronic conditions through self-management support that includes collaborative goal setting, action planning, and problem-solving).
Fix a recent or recurring problem that all agree needs to be fixed to restore a process to the level it was designed to perform or to exceed expected performance.

Decrease inappropriate utilization of emergency department
Decrease wait time for cancer patients seeking overnight lodging
Increase community resident attendance in fitness programs
Increase screening for behavioral health in primary care
Increase student asthma medications in the school nurse's office
Improve completion of a tobacco smoking history reminder in outpatient primary care
Improve emergency department care for patients with deep venous thrombosis/pulmonary embolism
Improve emergency department flow from admission to time in a bed
Improve follow-up post-hospital stay
Improve housing placements; improve rapid re-housing
Improve hydration in an elderly ward
Improve medical screening process; increase screening rate for social needs in an ambulatory clinic
Reduce appointment "no-shows"
Reduce paperwork for patients (and increase patient and provider workflow and satisfaction).
Reducing parental complaints regarding homework
Reduce pressure ulcers; visual cues for bedside staff in pediatric pressure ulcer prevention
Reduce resident falls with harm
Reduce the number of days to schedule an appointment for surgery

Agenda

This program consists of 13 live online sessions, each from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM ET, and self-paced activities to be completed outside of the live sessions. Self-paced activities between sessions are required and should take no longer than one hour to complete.

Topics Covered

The Improvement Coach Program covers coaching individuals and teams on the science of improvement and coaching tactics specific to improvement teams. This program is highly interactive; participants can practice their learning with peers one-on-one and in small groups. Participants are also expected to practice with their teams back home regularly. A summary of topics covered includes:

Continuing Education

In support of improving patient care, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the health care team.

This program is approved to provide 40 credits for physicians, nurses, pharmacy, and Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) recertification.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement designates this blended learning activity for a maximum of 38 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity may also be applicable for other professions that accept AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

CE Instructions

To be eligible for a continuing education certificate, attendees must complete the online evaluation within 30 days of the continuing education activity. After this period, you will be unable to receive a certificate.

Continuing education credits will not be awarded for non-educational activities, including (but not limited to) meals, breaks, and receptions.

To apply for a scholarship, please complete the online Scholarship Application by July 15, 2024. IHI will not consider applications submitted after this date.

IHI will notify all applicants of their scholarship status by August 5, 2024.

All Scholarships are reviewed on an individual basis. If multiple individuals from the same organization wish to apply for a scholarship, each individual must submit an application.

To ensure equal distribution of funds, all scholarship applications are reviewed using the same scoring criteria. All awarded amounts are final.

Please note scholarships are available for program registration costs only and do not cover travel, food, or accommodation costs associated with attending a program.

Cancellations, Refunds, Substitutions

Payments: Full payment is due 60 days before the start of the program. If payment in full is not received within 60 days before the program start date, IHI will notify you and cancel your registration.
- Credit card payments: Enter your credit card information online during the registration process or call the IHI Customer Experience Department to process payment over the phone.
- Check payments: Please mail a copy of the invoice with your check made payable to IHI.
Cancellations: For cancelations made within 45 days before the start of a program, Registration fees are fully refundable if a written request is received by info@ihi.org on or before 45 days before the start of the program.
Refunds: IHI will issue all refunds in the original payment type (credit card or check) within 30 days. Registrations received 45 days or less before the start of the program are not refundable.
Substitutions: One attendee may be substituted for another by calling the IHI Customer Experience Department or emailing info@ihi.org.
