Background and Overview of IHI’s Refined Scale-up Framework
All
During this sessions, IHI’s Pierre Barker and Marie Schall will explain the evolution of concepts that led to the creation of a new model for achieving results at scale, and share an overview of the three components of the new approach. Jason Jones and Kathy Duncan will introduce two case studies that will discussed in detail throughout the program. This sessions will also include time for participants to work on their own projects.
After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Explain evolution of concepts to guide efforts to achieve results at scale
  • Describe the three components of IHI’s framework for scaling up improvement
  • Understand how the case studies illustrate the elements of the framework
10:00 AM – 10:15 AM
Break
10:15 AM – 11:45 AM
Set-up Phase
All
Taking an improvement to full scale starts with a strong foundation. During this session, Pierre Barker and Marie Schall will review the key elements required for successfully preparing to take an improvement to full scale. Jason and Kathy will continue presenting their case studies with a focus on what the set-up phase looked like. This session will also include time for participants to work on their own projects.
After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the steps in the set-up phase
  • Describe how leadership, communications, and support systems are used to establish a foundation for a scale-up effort
  • Identify potential infrastructure issues such as  measurement, IT, and building a learning system
  • Apply learning from the case studies to deepen understanding of the set-up phase

Build a Scalable Unit
All
The next phase of taking an initiative to full scale is to create a “scalable unit” by intensively testing ideas on a small scale to determine promising practices for wider implementation, including testing communication messages and methods for attracting and supporting potential adopters, and planning for infrastructure changes to support sustainable changes at full scale. During this session, Pierre Barker and Marie Schall will present the key elements for this phase and Jason and Kathy will continue their case studies. This session will also include time for participants to work on their own projects.
After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the steps in building the scalable unit phase
  • Use adoption mechanisms needed to develop the scalable unit
  • Identify infrastructure issues that need to be addressed to build the scalable unit
  • Describe the development of the scalable unit in each of the case studies

Break
3:15 PM – 4:45 PM
Testing for Scale-up
All
The next step in taking an improvement to full scale is to test the applicability of implementing improvements in the broader range of settings likely to be encountered in moving to full scale. During this session, Pierre Barker and Marie Schall will present the key elements for this phase and Jason and Kathy will continue their case studies. This session will also include time for participants to work on their own projects.
After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the steps in the test scale-up phase
  • Use adoption mechanisms needed to test scale-up
  • Identify infrastructure issues that need to be addressed to test scale-up
  • Describe how each case study tested scale-up

Moving to Full Scale and Sustainability
All
With a well-tested set of improvements — supported by a reliable data feedback system — the next phase includes planning for and carrying out the rapid deployment of these improvements at full scale. Pierre Barker and Marie Schall will review the adoption mechanisms and support systems required to take an improvement to full scale.  Jason and Kathy will then wrap-up their case studies, describing how they were able to move their initiatives to full scale and sustain them. This session will also include time for participants to wokr on their own projects.
After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the steps in going to full-scale phase
  • Use adoption mechanisms needed to go to full-scale
  • Identify infrastructure issues that need to be addressed to go to full-scale
  • Describe how Project JOINTS took their initiative full-scale
  • Use the case study to indentify potential strategies for rapid scale-up efforts and this phase
10:00 AM – 10:15 AM
