February 21, 2019, 4:00 PM ET: How to Speak So Leaders Will Listen

  • Derek Feeley, President and CEO, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)

  • Angela A. Shippy, MD, FACP, FHM, Senior Vice President & Chief Quality Officer, Memorial Hermann Health System

How much thought and preparation go into how you pitch new ideas and initiatives to leaders in your organization? If you've been frustrated by lack of support or buy-in from a leader, it's possible that you did not win that person over at the start.

IHI President and CEO, Derek Feeley, recently penned a blog on the ingredients he's found can help an initial pitch succeed. He's eager to tell you about the "special sauce" that tends to get the attention of leaders on the February 21 WIHI: How to Speak So Leaders Will Listen.

Joining Derek is Angela Shippy, Memorial Hermann Health System's Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer. Both she and Derek appreciate how challenging it can be to lack the backing or active involvement of leadership to pursue continuous improvement in health and health care. Without the support, it's much harder to motivate others.

That's why on this WIHI our two leadership experts will share their suggestions for getting any leader's attention, including: focus on the crispness, clarity, and brevity of your initial appeal, the so-called elevator pitch; incorporate issues you know a leader cares about; keep it real with patient stories and your own authenticity; and go easy on the facts and supporting evidence — that comes later.

If you'd like to share a pitch you're working on (or have used), send it to Info@IHI.org with "Pitch Perfect" in the subject line. You're welcome to write out your pitch or send us a recorded version — either way, please keep it brief and don't go over two minutes.

Derek and Angela will offer feedback on as many pitches as possible during the February 21 WIHI. And, let us know if you prefer your name, and/or your organization's name, remain anonymous. Pitch at the ready or not, we all stand to learn, so we look forward to everyone's engagement with this next WIHI!
