IHI Senior Fellow Roger Resar believes that health care organizations sometimes put too much emphasis on high reliability. He argues instead for the value of less-than-perfect design. In addition to being liberating, less-than-perfect design allows simplification. The more you strive for 100 percent reliability, the more complex a process becomes.
