Healthcare Workers Holding the Line Against Pandemic: But at What Long-Term Mental Cost?

Many have died and more have been sickened by COVID-19. The nation’s health care workers may pay a mental health price, a “moral injury” not unlike soldiers returning from war, mental health experts warn. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is addressing these current and looming issues through a series of webinars and papers on “psychological PPE (personal protective equipment).” The idea is that much as they don masks, gloves, and gowns, medical workers need “barriers” to protect their mental health.
