Working in segments is a key part of applying reliability science. Based on project management techniques, it is recommended that the segments of a population be identified first, with careful identification as to their differences and the different types of changes that each may require. Using a table to document each segment and the changes planned helps to keep the work focused. Examples of completed tables are provided.
The presentation, developed by Roger Resar, MD, IHI Senior Fellow, describes how to identify segments and provides instructions for using the Segment Design Table. A blank version of the Segment Design Table is also attached as a tool that can be used for planning work in segments.
