Incidence of Resistant Bacterial Strains

Definition

Number of resistant strains per 1000 patient days; use laboratory determination of resistant strain. If the same strain is isolated several times from the same patient, it should only be reported once. If the apparently same strain is isolated from several patients, it should be reported for each patient.

Formula: The number of different resistant strains divided by the number of surgical Intensive Care Unit patient days, multiplied by 1000.

Goal

Monitor to avoid increases, which may result from overuse of antibiotics.
