Device Use – Safety Briefing Model
Iowa Health System
Des Moines
,
Iowa
,
USA
The tool was developed by safety administrators at Iowa Health System (IHS) to help front-line staff initiate Device Use – Safety Briefings, which provide a forum for shared observations and concerns related to the use of medical devices, equipment, and complex software in the institution. The Briefings aim to stimulate safety awareness among IHS staff and foster a culture open to reporting errors, while improving employee satisfaction.
Background
IHS developed several versions of this Briefing, based on the
Safety Briefings Tool
devised by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Initial versions were customized for specific departments such as radiology and transportation services. The Device Use – Safety Briefing was first tested by the Safety Team at IHS’s Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
