Intravenous Insulin Infusion Orders

Fairview Southdale Hospital
Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Clinicians in many hospitals use standing order sets to help them quickly select appropriate medications and dosages. This is Fairview Southdale Hospital’s set of standing orders for intravenous infusion of insulin. It was designed for use with an adult population. Orders such as this one not only help clinicians make appropriate selections quickly, but also may significantly reduce the risk of adverse drug events (ADEs) and other errors. Organizations developing their own standing orders for intravenous insulin infusion may find this example helpful.

Directions

Feel free to print or download the tool. You will probably have to review and modify it before you can test the standard order set in your own organization. For example, ensure (1) that clinicians who might use this set are in agreement with the selections, dosages, and parameters, and (2) that the orders are appropriate for the patient population.
