IHI.org: A Key Resource in the UK’s Efforts to Improve Patient Safety

According to Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer for England, patient safety is an issue for health care systems all over the world. The United Kingdom is leading the way to develop a systematic approach to reducing the risk of error in health care, and intends to use IHI.org as a key resource in that effort.

"Improving the patient experience is at the heart of the UK Government’s National Health Service (NHS) Modernisation Plans. This is why policies are now in place to establish a clear ‘clinical governance’ framework of accountability within the health service, to improve the quality of care provided.

"Our aim is to ensure that every health organisation creates the culture, the systems and the support mechanisms to make quality assurance, patient safety, and quality improvement part and parcel of routine clinical practice.

"Improving the quality of health care is a global issue. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the British Medical Journal make a dynamic contribution to the quality agenda with this excellent website and I am delighted that the National Patient Safety Agency is adding its support."
