Improve Core Processes for Ordering Medications:
Provide the Pharmacy with Renal Function Data
Clinicians should always consider the results of renal function studies whenever they prescribe medications. Results indicating impaired renal function often call for altering doses. If pharmacists get real-time results of all renal function studies, they can monitor for patients who may need dosage adjustments. Then the pharmacists can either alert physicians or, if policies or protocols allow, make adjustments themselves without contacting physicians. Allowing pharmacists to adjust doses promptly without physician approval saves time and can prevent adverse drug events.
