Improve Core Processes for Ordering Medications:
Include Renal Function Data on CPOE Screens

Before ordering a dose of a medication, either an initial dose or an adjustment, the prescriber should always review the latest data on the patient’s renal function. A computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE) system should either display those data or offer a direct link to them, right on the order entry screen. The more convenient the renal function data, the more likely the prescriber will be to review them.

Tips
  • Use color codes or alert screens to draw attention to abnormal renal function results.
  • Make sure the CPOE system displays the most current results.
